Hi all, newbie here. I wonder if anyone can help with the following. I seem to recall a thread on here discussing a company in Germany that carried out the V8 M62/S62 engine into E46 conversions for Hartge (and apparently now does them directly) does anyone know which company this is and would you have their contact details ? P.S. I've tried a search using Hartge, engine conversion, engine transplant V8 into E46 etc but to no avail. Any leads gratefully accepted !! |

Thanks Uwe , there used to be a company called Mutec (massively expensive) which did the conversion but a google search only shows their products (wheels/spoilers) being sold through an accessories site now.

I should be so lucky. Uwe I'm after a complete conversion, most likely using a 4.4 or 4.6 V8 enginewith an ASA supercharger or similar (not the M5 engine) |

I had a good poke round their 150i when it came into Birds workshop - wow what an awesome car - loads of grip and soooooo easy to drive. The conversion looked fairly straightforward, when the car was in the air, I identified what they had done - some of it looked a bit 'hammer - refined, ' but , all in all it seemed to work really well. The equivalent job into the E46 is something I am seriously looking into doing - my old '99 323i 'smoke' is getting a bit leggy now and needs some new life injected into it! IMO , the best engine to hook a 'charger up to would be either a 4.4 M62 non vanos or 4.0 M60 with alusil block. Iv'e done a few Dinan kits and have got to say the 4.4 non vanos with charger feels stronger than my M5! Cheers Phil Edited by 286bhp |

286bhp, Seems great minds think alike.................... My plan was to use an early E46 M3 (something a bit leggy on the miles, if poss with an SMG box) could the flappy paddles then be used to work the autobox ? Crane out the six pot and drop in a M62 lump with either an ASA or Dinan S/C kit with a slushbox on the back off it. What car model/year had the 4.4 non vanos engine in it ? The Dinan S/C kits look expensive in comparison with some of the other kits available from the States. (Are you paying for the name or are they better quality ?) Does anyone market a kit utilising the ASA charger ? (I've been on ASA's site and no mention is made of specific kits for individual cars) What sort of power/torque did the Dinan S/C 4.4 NV cars make ? 400-420Hp and 360-380 Ft Lbs Torque?

Website in developement ( that old chestnut - no really !!) a complicated site so lots of tech , but I will put full project detail in when set up ( and when Iv'e paid my advertising to BMW CC ). The Dinan kit is of high quality, and everything fits without too much hassle. The instructions are fairly foolproof , iv'e fitted many S/C kits that have lost a lot in the language translation, as well as differences between the kit in the instructions and the supplied kit.( no I don't work for Dinan - I tell as I see ) Dinan claimed around 412bhp, the car was a 97/8 non vanos E39 4.4. Torque was a lot more than the S62 at 397lb/ft. The car pulled very strongly through the midrange, as you'd expect , it didn't really need to be revved over 6k to really produce the goods. Another method would be to take the M62 and take it to 5.0l, reboring the block with steel top-hat liners, somehting that works really well with race engines - gets rid of the will it - won't it wear out-worries of the Alusil / Nikasil block , enabling lots more piston/ring options to try. This will return an easy 385 bhp without the cooling and space issues of an s/c. If you were then really power corrupted , some l/c pistons and a good s/c conversion for the wrong side of 500 bhp .......

286bhp 5 Litre conversion is/was the route taken by Mutec to gain 380 BHP from their conversion (as I recall it was quite pricey) The Dinan S/C sounds like the way to go as it produces the goods without having to be revved particularly hard. What does the 5 litre steel liner option cost to your knowledge ? How did Alpina gain their capacity increase on the B10 V8 conversions ?

The 4.8 has a capacity increase to 93mm, it also gains S62 conrods and a custom crank- I have't got the stroke specs to hand. The 5 litre conversion does the same , but with a stroke increase again. I can get prices for the steel liner option. For a one - off top hat bore sleeve, about £200 + vat. Obviously for 8, price price is less, depends on spec , bore size etc. On top of that, new pistons / rods - £1000 for pistons, £1500 custom crank, £1200 - £1500 for custom forged rods. The 5.0 litre engine is a good £8000 , but engineered correctly, should last a looooooong time. The Dinan S/C will probably cost about the same - I think it retails at $15,000 in the us. Most Hartge 5.0's return 385bhp on stock exhausts, headers & heads. With a good head port, cams, biggger TB, they reckoned 400 + may be possible.

hi
sorry to mention the s62 again but it puts out 400 bhp standard and much more is possible!! i think dinan had an e39 m5 putting out 470bhp,and i was reading up on that new ascari kz1 super car and they have managed 500bhp with external mods only!! wouldnt that be better?

Eljockvis, S62 engine is not compatible with an autobox to the best of my knowledge. I want something big with plenty of torque that's also smooth as well. Not looking for lots of revs and thunder, discretion is far more fun. (Oh yes, I'm lazy as well !!) |

Iv'e seen a couple of reasonably heavily modded S62's, the best one gave 445bhp, thats with race cats, sport exhaust, tubular manifolds, headwork, shrick cams, engine software , intake system upgrade and a large bill to fit it all. Another colleague sent a customers S62 engine from the U.S. all the way to Nowack in Germany, and got 450 bhp for $40,000 !!!! I suspect a much higher c/r and steel liners will be necessary for 500bhp Regards

286HP, Nowack used to claim 500PS for their S62 N500 conversion..............fantasy figures IMHO !!

i thought you guys might like this,i thought the e39 m5 could give the stock e60 a semi decent run but i was wrong,check oot this moded dinan 470 bhp e39 m5 getting trashed,
