My Highline owners manual (part # 01 41 9 781 911 VIII/8 ) indicates Bosch W8LCR OR W8LPR, both with a heat valueof 145.
My copy of the US & Canadian models only manual, part # 01 47 9 781 952 US 8/88, also lists the W8 LCR plug. I also have an E34 5 series owners manual (part #01 41 9 781 891 VIII/8 ) which covers petrol models 520, 525, 530, 535. Also lists the Bosch W8 LCR. So this plug seems pretty ubiquitious. Brucey is running (in what I believe is the same later M30 engine) NGK BP6 ET - for a reason, not an 8 heat-rated plug. Horsetan is running the earlier M30 engine with WR78........ The previous owner of my Highline (sharkfan) recommends the Champion double copper - tho' can't recall the actual model ref. I'm going to put new plugs in over the weekend anyway, but will be on a rolling road next weekend, so thought I ought to be 100% sure which plugs I should be putting in. No catalyst. Stainless exhaust system. Fuel will as likely be a good 97/99 Octane unleaded fuel, or Shell Optimax unleaded. Any advice please greatfully appreciated. |

ECP stock the originally oem manual listed W8 LCR, although the dealer reckons its now the W8 DC.......
Am still confused, have been onto the Bosch website & that doesnt really help, it gives general models but doesn't list application data or understand any of the terms above in its own search bar....... Just; Super Plus (Yttrium) Super Super 4 Silver So I'm still none the wiser as to which one of those is THE plug range........ |

Thanks, realOEM say W8 LCR, same as my Owners manual..... However, I'm aware that manufacturers bring out new models, hence trying to find an online site that lists Bosch plugs in a cross-reference format, but as yet to no avail..... Don't want to put the LCR's in if the W8 DC is the up to date version.... Also, many plugs now are pre-set in terms of gap, certainly the super 4 type, but I don't know which type the LCR or DC's are within the Bosch range. |

One of the thing a rolling road will show up is how the spark plugs are working (I don't mean getting tired or misfiring).
From my days of reading Cars & Car Conversions I found that using a slightly different grade of plug ("hotter" or "colder") can improve the general running of the engine. Lots of factors are taken into account ie. ambient temperature (Arizona is very different to the UK), running conditions (city vs. motorway) etc. In the same way that modern oils are fit for all seasons instead of the winter or summer oils your dad used, modern spark plugs have wider range than they used to have. It might be worth taking a couple of sets along to see. Will be interested to see how your new chip performs. Has fuel consumption increased since fitting? A set of plugs for my Audi A6 lasted 40k miles but a new set was £180!!! |

In the end I have bought a set of Bosch WR 8 DC+.

Cheers Andy, I missed this whilst merrily posting away about my plug dilemma!! Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the tappets done, fit the new plugs, fit a new K&N conical filter via a ram air cone system I've made up myself....... I will be able to change back to OE spec, so I'm hoping I'll be able to do the rroad with both set-ups, standard & 'dave-modded'. I'm not sure how the results will show up on mine, I've got a blow at the exhaust manifold, I think around the rearmost cylinder, so I'm going to lose torque & know doubt power as well. I was tempted to get it fixed prior to the rroad, but as I'm due to have a tubular manifold made up & fitted (for FREE) shortly, any issues with studs etc can be left until then. I think the chip is working ok, but until I've got the engine into a nice state of fettle, the effects are possibly being masked by other issues, such as the manifold, tappets out of adjustment etc. My SI board is playing up as well at the mo, so my speedo is only working about 60% of the time so consequently the OBC figures are being screwed as well. Then again, despite filling with Optimax, I'm not driving it anything like an economical fashion..... I've changed the oil & filter today as well which was due (by time, not mileage....) & worth doing prior to the rroad anyway. Will keep you posted. |
