on a related note, did anyone see Traffic Cops last night?  the BiB in an impreza, the crims in a mitsibishi evo 8 fq-300.... a clean getaway

I always thought that the EVO was a better car, but doesn't sound as nice as the Scooby.

Sorry mate 53 years young. After the usual Moggie 1000, mini's, anglia, viva, mgb gt,cortina's of all shapes and sizes and lots of other stuff got 1st BMW,(a 2002) in 1978. I was 25. Didn't keep it long (as I didn't with any car in those days) Had all sorts of stuff after that but went back to BM's just over 7 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Forgot how enjoyable driving a car could be. Made me feel young again.

Well All I can say is it didn't happen smoothly.

In my early 20's I was a bit manic and thought I should "DO" and "HAVE" everything before 30 and then "check out" so to speak. I was not bothered how much things cost I just had what I wanted when I could have it. Got a lot of debt but have many more happy memories of flying planes and helicopters and driving nice cars and motorbikes. I thought when it all ran out I'd blow my brains out and have "lived a good life".

As a consequence I have done and had more than most. Problem is I decided I wanted to Live and then I had to work barsteward hard to get the books to balance. I had 2 years where I had to double my income year on year to keep from financial ruin. So you could say I created a problem and them figured out (when backed into a corner) how to solve it.

Since then I have stopped loosing money on cars and many of the later cars I have bought, enjoyed for a while and then sold for a profit. I had, after all become good and buying cars at the right price!

I've made up to £8k in a year from buying and selling bikes but I have worked hard at other jobs and investment/business oportunities in recent years so that I can live a reasonable standard and support my twins ( who I would have left fatherless had I stuck to my first plan... sad but true).

So yes, I have had an extraordinary 12 years and have read and learned a great deal along the way. I wouldn't prescribe it but I have become exceptionally happy in who I am throughout this process and very accepting of life.

Don't think I have been that frank with anyone about it all before so there you go. must be having a good day!

My previous owner list is rubbish compared to what I've seen here!  Here it goes, though!

Austin Maestro 1984 1.3

Datsun Cherry 1984 1.3 (boxy shaped one)

VW Jetta 1988 1.3 (with 4 speed manual gearbox)

Rover 214si 1993 1.4

(all above belonged to my parents)

Bought my first car from my father at 23 - Peugeot 405 1989 1.9 diesel (non-turbo) estate.  Clutch went, and the garage put a hole in the radiator when they were fixing it.  Was plauged with electrical problems.  Paid £3,000 (€3,800) for it, and sold it 2 years later for £800.

Second car was a Honda Civic Coupe 1995 1.5lsi.  Absolutely loved that car, as at the time there weren't many of the 2 doors around.  Drove it for 2 1/2 years, and put 40,000 miles up on it.  Paid around £6,000 (€7,600) for it in 1999, and got €2,000 for it on trade in (garage rang me 2 months later complaining that the engine was destroyed, and wanted me to pay for repairs - didn't take into account that the muppet who bought it was doing handbrake turns in it in the middle of the road!)

I bought a 1995 Honda Accord Coupe (€2,500 with the Civic), which I found rather dull after the Civic.  It was the 2.0 lsi.  Sold it last year for €1,000.

Drove a fiat Marea Estate 2000 1.6 for a couple of months, then "borrowed" my mothers e39 520 for a couple of weeks while she was on holiday.  Ended up buying my own e39 520 on 1.3.05 while she was still on holidays!!!

BTW, I'm just gone 30.

I see there's a couple of former Austin Maestro owners here - have you heard the song about them by Stackridge? It's quite funny, even mentions BMW's!
Here's a list of cars that I can remember having!! I am 32, passed my test in 1990.

Mk 1 Cavalier (2-door 1600 black)
Mk 2 Escort (2 door rosso red)
Mk 5 Cortina (rosso red)
Mk 5 Cortina (carnival red & brown vinyl roof - aka Jaffa Cake!)
Mk 3 Capri (pearlescent white)
Mk 4 Cortina (poo brown)
Another 2-door mk 1 cavalier (beige)
Mitsubishi Sapporo GSR (brown - what a car - better than the Celeste!)
Mk 1 Celica (1976 - white - clutch went so bye-bye!)
A fair few sierra hatchbacks, then a red 2 ltr sapphire
Granada 2.9 V6 Ghia (blue)
Granada Scorpio 2.0 (black)
Mondeo 1800 TD (burgundy)
Then my present car, a 1990 BMW 520i SE (brilliantrot)

Cheers,

Shaun
