I've been thinking recently about getting a new steed.... not quiet yet, but just starting to consider replacements. It got me thinking about cars in the future and what I would or could afford from step to step.

My car history is hhhmmm, that of a lad who bought a house at 18 and got married at 19.... somewhat dicey:

  • 1980 Nissan Micra - Green w/ beige  - Got in place of a £50 debt - Lasted 2 weeks
  • 1984 Renault 5 - <1000cc - Cost £200 with a £100 stereo - Lasted 3 months before exploding
  • 1993 Escort - £1300 - Poop, but ok - Rear ended after 6 months & w/o
  • 1993 405 GRDT - £700 - Not bad, never cost a penny until it's turbo died at 123k
  • 1996 Megane - Wanted a 318iS, wife said no (sensibly), looked nice, kept it mint - blew a conrod through the block
  • 02 CTR - Nabbed a pool car from work for ages (I controlled the pool!!!) Nasty little thing, fun though - smashed the mirror off on a country road once
  • 95 M3 - Sold/bought house, got a new job, teenager love affair dream achieved.

And there is am. The car I wanted more than anything... and I'd had it. Now what? Well.... E46 M3. But it just doesn't quiet do it for me.

I saw an 850 recently and quite liked it, but it's not really that fast and it's a bit grown up. M5? Far too grown up for me.

Supra? Maybe?....... Not an ///M car though is it.

One car I truely want to own is a Countach. "Stupid rubbish blah blah" .... not the point. But that will have to wait for a good few years yet.

So what do I do? I need direction. Tell me about your experiences...

Less exciting than that lot? crikey...

Who knows? I don't really have a price in mind to be honest.

£10k? £20k?

I'm not really into 'new' cars either  (I'm an arkward devil)

If it was me and I had a decent wedge to spend it would be a Porsche. 20 k would buy an absloute minter of a 928GTS, manual. 350bhp, 170mph and 0-60 in a shade over 5 seconds. Running costs would be very high so I would also consider a 968 club sport.

Other than a Porsche or the obvious M cars not sure.

I do like Skylines. You could pick up a nice R33 GTR for as little as 10k although good ones start at about 15. I also like the supra and that will be very reliable as well as fast.

The car I would really like next though is a Porsche 993 although I'll have to find around 25 to 30k and a new house is the next big purchase for me..

I did consider a 968 and then dismissed it due to the power. Can you get a blown version? 928? Is that a V8? Interesting....

I had a look at a couple of skylines when I was shopping for the M3. Couldn't get on with either (standard turbo & modified TT) due to their ma-cheese-mo attitude and dated looks. (same to be said for the owner... gimp)

I'd rather a 996 than a 993 so maybe one for the future but I've always thought of 911's as a bit, well, you know

Nice motor although I personally would go for a manual. They go for quite a bit more than autos though.

The V8 sounds absolutely awesome

I suspect the E46 is a bit too sanitised. You might want to step back in time a bit and look at something like an E28 or E34 M5 or an E30 M3. Alpinas are also a bit special, I think the E30 C2 (?) 2.7 was quite lovely, and I think there was also a 3.5 E30 (B3?) -- or an E34 B10 Bi-turbo, if you're feeling brave.

Of course, if you're clinically insane  (like me!), you could drop between 2 and 4 grand and get yourself an E21 323i, especially if you can find a Baur. A couple of hundred quid on 15" alloys, front and rear strut brace and decent tyres, and you would need to have the smile surgically removed.

Sanitised is a good word for the E46. I prefer coupes really too so sack the M5 from the list.

(Oooh, Cerbera.... Maybe not)

**m635 /  E34 B10 Bi-turbo**

Hmmmm... I don't really want anything under 300hp. You'll have to enlighten me as to the power specs for the above.

Interested though...

Why 300 BHP? You can have a lot of fun in a light car with low BHP. Try an E30 M3 and you will see what I mean. Straight-line power is nothing ... handling is everything.

I'd say a sweet R33 GTR Skyline,

it's got the power (280 standard but the engines are good for 500+)

the handling, 4 wheel drive+ 4 wheels stear!!

check gt-culture.com out for some good un's.

If your looking for over 300bhp and under 20k then you really only have a few ways to go.

BMW E39 M5, E46 M3 or an alpina.

Audi or merc?, mind if you think the E46 M3 is sanatised then you won't want either of these.

Japanese. Supra, skyline, scooby etc. Most don't have 300bhp as standard but can be easiliy tuned.

Other than that there's the 928 or a TVR of some description.

Oi! What about the E34 M5.... late models = 340bhp & six speed (if you're that way inclined)

What about a Fiat Multipla........They're quite nice.

Seriously though, look at the Skylines if none of the M cars float your boat. or if you fancy a bit of a classic, an Audi Quatro UR Turbo. Now that was one of the best cars I've ever driven BUT buy wisely.

Of the BM's it would have to be either an e30 M3 EVO or a late e34 M5
