I'm sure there must be some way of getting the stats from the DVLA but somebody many already know. It would be interesting to know by year of registration but maybe I getting greedy!

....would also be interesting to know how many right hookers were made of the 3.6s and 3.8s (I think in all around 8500 3.6s and 3500 3.8s were made)

I have found the following info (seems accurate) which may be of interest. If anybody has different info I would be interested.

Total ///m5 3.6 = 8079 (+265 shipped in kit form - CKD)

Total ///M5 3.8 = 3014  (+891 ///M5 3.8 Touring)

The following shows the total built each year.

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.6

1988 331
1989 2339
1990 3022
1991 2033
1992 224
1993 130

Total 8079

Added to these come 265 cars which where shipped from Germany to be assembled somewhere else, the so called CKD cars.

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.8

1991 120
1992 1553
1993 643
1994 483
1995 215

Total 3014

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.8 Touring

1992 446
1993 209
1994 117
1995 119

Total 891

So the total number of E34 ///M5's are 12249

From 1989 untill 1995, BMW UK sold 696 cars (all Saloons as the Tourings where LHD only), in Australia there are 45 cars sold from 1990-1992 which make RHD = 741.  I would really like to know how many of the 696 are still registered.

Kevin

Any idea on the 3.6/3.8 split for the 696? and what was the story behind the CKD cars?

Sorry I have no more detail behind these figures. I would love to know how many RHD 3.8's are running around the UK. I recall somebody saying that there are very few but I would like to see the DVLa figures to confirm.

Oh well one day maybe.

I'm intrigued by the CKD cars, trying to find out more.

Eureka - I now have the year by year breakdown from 1990 through to 1996 as at the end of 2001. There is some data for registrations in 1998 through 2001 but it is thought by the SMMT to be dirty data, I think some may be cars imported and registered into the UK privately but there is no way of telling how many.

I hope the table below remains legible.

Year         3.6       3.8
1990         137        -
1991          91        -
1992          48       48
1993           2       87
1994           3       84
1995           2       83
1996           -        2

Total        283      304 (one more 3.6 and one less 3.8 to my earlier post)
               48%    52%

It may be possible (for a charge of at least £75 - levied by the SMMT) to get the original registration figures by year. If enough people are interested to share the cost then I would be willing to find out if it is possible and get a firm price.

Personally I am satisfied with knowing roughly how many are still around now. Unfortunately some will have been wrecked last year I just hope not too many and nobody got injured.

Regards
Kevin

I'm new to this site so hello. I've owned mine for about 6 months now. Before I bought mine I had never seen one in the flesh, within 2 weeks I came across 3 all within 5 miles of my home. Since then they have dried up again, what i'd like to know is, are there any other active owners up here in Scotland.

Saw another M5 coming the other way to me in my neck of the woods (Elephant and Castle) today. First I`ve seen for months. Looked like a tidy H reg in black.

Cheque book took another severe beating today - 4 new Bridgestone SO3s been fitted.

Oh well...

Stevie,

Off with the Kumhos/Falkens and on with the S03s! Feels like a new drive.

Bought them from Kwikfit in Camberwell Road for £648 - 2 x 235 45 17 and 2 x 255 40 17 inc balancing.

Price was discounted from over £700. I didnt shop around though.

Any good?

Frank

That sounds quite good, I did shop around a little bit up here in Glasgow but couldn't get them any cheaper than that Gordon Hazeltons.

About the difference in the drive, I had Goodyear F1s on and they were s*** compared to the S03s, i'm having that much fun I don't think they'll last long. I still have the F1s on the front but that's gonnae change soon.

Cheers

Stevie

Stevie,

Another alternative which I came across on the net (after having tyres fitted) was www.mytyres.net they seem to sell tyres at remarkably low prices. I know nothing about them however.

Anyway yes the car seems much more precise and balanced since fitting the S03s. Only thing is I forgot they need time to `bed` and nearly wrote myself and some civilians off at City Road roundabout by losing back end big time (too much lock and hoof). Somewhat embarrasing but no harm done.

Watch out for the yellow cameras,

Frank

If you use Kwikfit keep an eye on them - checked my alloys after having the car washed they have scratched them around the rim. Not good. Is it not possible to change tyres on these wheels without ******* the rims up?

Frank

it is possible not to scratch the wheels, that's why I do prefer to deal with specialists, mind you I use the word specialists lightly when I talk about the guys I use. In their defence, the trouble they had fitting the S03s to my wheels was the tightest tyre fit I've ever experienced, it took 3  men and the tears were streaming down my face with laughter because one of them was my friend and it was good to see that B*****d sweat for a change. The best thing was that my mate knew that if he scratched them I would hang him out to dry.

Frank if I were you I would approach dick-fit and claim them, if they give you any trouble threaten to go the press as bad press always makes people think twice

According to the figures I have here, DVLA lists 584 M5s still registered in the UK, all of these cars first registered between 1988 and 1996 which pretty much narrows it down to E34.

139 of these were first registered in 1990, which seems to be the most popular year.

Paul

Are your figures more recent than those I posted earlier this month (9 Jan)? Mine where based on DVLA records as end Dec 2001. If they are then we seem to have "lost" 3  overall (587 -> 584) but gained 2 for 1990 (137 -> 139).

If you have later data and a by year reg analysis it would be interesting to see how they vary.

Kevin
