This could be a few factors.

As mentioned the voltage regulator is the main culprit in the majority of cases and they are only sub £10 from GSF etc for a Bosch part.

I had a similar problem last year and just decided to have my whole alternator recondition at a cost of £50.

Well worth the money

Dave,

If you need a 'known ok' alt to swap it over with you can always try the one on mine?  a  bit of a hassle to take it off....

but the offer is there all the same.

You can test this by checking the resistance between the exiter terminal (the small one) on the alternator and earth. Test this with the engine stopped, idling and when you rev. The resistance should remain constant if the brushes are making good contact with the tracks on the rotor.

Brushes are a likly culprit. Making good contact an lower speeds but failing at higher speeds.

This evening my voltage started doing funny things...
at idle it has dropped to 12.8volts (from 13.7) but
when you rev the engine the voltage goes down to
around 11v. Let it idle again goes back up to 12.8v

Sound like the alternator ?
Voltage reg. is about 2 years old. Battery is fairly new.
Grounds are OK. But couldn't see much else as it
was dark.
