The heated rear window on my 1995 525i saloon doesn't work. The
switch lights up when I press it but the element doesn't demist the
window. I've checked the fuse and it's fine.
The wiring diagram shows a lockout relay - anyone know where to find
this? Also, anyone know where the rear window is earthed?

The relay may well be under the rear seat, passenger side.
There are a number of them, together with VHS-like black boxes, one of them controls the central locking etc. The other, I can't recall.

Our 95 520i saloon rear demister doesn't work, well the light doesn't come on with the engine running, but does on just ignition.......

Our boot wiring is suspect as it goes into the boot, there are broken wires there, job for the weekend - thats what I suspect is causing our problems.

Hope you suss it out!

I have just purchased a 1990 535i Sport and I have the same problem. All the other electrics are fine except for the heated rear window. Light comes on the switch just doesn't demist. Somebody must know the answer.

My 94 525 is the same - and I keep looking at this thread hoping somebody knows the answer!  I may get the meter out this weekend for a look, but then again, it might be too cold.

Just noticed that the rear window blind doesn't work either. I wonder if
they use the same relay. Like andy S, I will investigate if the weather is not
to evil this weekend.
If all else fails, may resort to cutting the rear half off an E34 with working
rear end electrics and welding it onto the front of my car! At least I'd be
warm while doing the welding.

check your boot wiring for broken wires in the loom, specifically on the n/s/r where the loom goes from the boot-lid hinge into the l/h/s rear of the boot!

I found lots of broken wires there.......

Nigel from Central region put me onto this one.

Whether the broken wires affect the wiring to the window or not I don't know, but it can't help IMHO!

Hope you sort!

Chased down the fault on mine to a blown 30A fuse under the rear seat.  Changed the fuse and all is now good.  A mercifully easy fix!

Aha, might be worth investigating that one!

Glad you got yours sorted Andy!

Just strange that with the ign on & engine off, the light on the HRW switch works, engine on, light goes off & won't come back on again......

Andy, you are a star!
Got home last night and with frost in the air I decided to dive under the
rear seat to search for the 30A heated rear window fuse you mentioned.
Sure enough, fuse number 35 was blown. With a new one fitted, my
morning commute up the A1 allowed for relaxed lane changing thanks to
proper rearward visibility – no more death-or-glory overtaking
manoeuvres!
Thanks for the info.

Newbie here although I've had my E34 Touring since new in Nov.'96(must be one of the last) Could anyone tell me if the wires in the n/side tailgate feed the heated window as mine doesn't work either. These wires are frayed but not completely broken, the only possible solution I can come up with, or does anyone have any other suggestions?? Thankyou.

Hi Peter

Not sure if this also applies to the Touring, but on the saloon the boot
wiring (which also tends to fray) only feeds the lighting at the rear. I
traced my faulty HRW to a blown fuse in one of the fuseboxes under the
rear seats - they're all labelled on the fusebox so it's easy to identify
which is which. I believe the HRW relay is under the seat as well.

Good luck

Phil
