Another special offer until December 24 is at Maplin

€329.99 for a Garmin Streetpilot i3.

I know nothing about the product except that Garmin is an established brand.

I've a Garmin 196 which I bought about two years ago. It's an aviation unit and so the streetmaps came as a very pricy extra. Having said that I can thoroughly recommend the brand.  Their website is a bit clunky, but they're still sending me firmware upgrades for free as they issue.

The big downside of GPS in Ireland is that little outside the major towns is mapped with street info, but that'll be true of whatever brabd you choose - the maps are bought in.

I've been finding the Aldi one very good.  Have used it in Galway, North Donegal, Midlands, Kilkenny, Dublin (for me, a lifesaver!), Antrim, Glasgow and London.  It's a portable device, so you can take it out of the car and use it by hand if necessary.  There are 2 view settings (2d and 3d), it gives eta, current speed, forward warning of exits of roundabouts, forward warning of junctions, as well as showing illustrations of same.

All in all, not overly expensive for what it does.

At least, that's my humble opinion, as I'm sure someone will jump on me for it!!!

Can anyone confirm to me that your government have now allowed comprehensive gps maps of your country available to the general public ?

Last time I tried to get some for my tom tom go, there weren't any.

Best Wishes

Nigel

Wasn't it in the Irish Times motoring section about 6 weeks ago that the entire country is to be mapped by Christmas of this year?  I kept the article somewhere so can check the date and the company who are doing the mapping.

It's certainly on the way though...

HERE'S the link to the report.

Fey,
Any idea how detailed the maps for Europe are?

The Aldi website says it covers the major roads in Western Europe... does it cover major cities at street level or just motorways? Just wondering if it would be any good for making your way around Paris for example?!

Also, can you download new maps from the manufacturer? If so, are they expensive?

Sorry for all the questions... don't know much about this stuff!

Denis - my brother uses the same gps system in Germany, and reckons it's a GIGO unit (Garbage In, Garbage Out); as long as you program it right, it'll get you to your destination.  He seems to find it pretty good.

Don't know about downloading maps - haven't felt the need to try yet (I'm not the sharpest tack in the box, so I get other people to do things like downloads for me!!).

Nigel - I don't think it's been a government conspiracy; afaik, there's a huge drive on at the moment (pardon the pun) to get the mapping completed.

What is the coverage like??  Is it full or the usual Dublin, Cork, Galway etc with little or nothing in between bar major roads and m-ways?

Because I had been thinking about getting a TomTom unit except  their website does not even list Ireland as having any coverage at all?
