I picked up the Aldi One today... I'm very impressed! Coverage between
towns is minimal, but the street level maps for Limerick is very
impressive! I reckon it will save me a lot of time when in Dublin!
Happy Out!

I went into Aldi, Tullamore this morning and was told that all the Sat Nav's were sold by 9.15. What a bummer. I think i'll check out the deal on the Garmin's. Would it be better to wait until after x-mas when the whole country will be mapped ?.

I use teletype myself. As with them all coverage is not the best around Ireland but in the city's no problem at all. I used it also in France and the UK and I have to say it was spot on. Hopefully new maps to come soon for Ireland. I only paid $139 usd for the software on the internet.

Retail price here is €499 - which is actually cheaper than the UK, but obviously way dearer than the 'states. I can do a bit better on that price, but as with most consumer electronics, theres not that much margin

Yep use Magellan Roadmate 300. Works perfectly, but not all minor roads
outside the big cities/towns are covered. Dublin is really well covered, including all the industrial estates etc. I have used it lots in the UK and its amazing - even tiny roads are covered. There is a new map card due out soon which will include more comprehensive mapping of ireland, but as it is it will get you to within a mile or two of pretty much anywhere you want to go anyway. |

there's any interest - I'm based in Dun Laoghaire. |

Richie What is the coverage like?? Is it full or the usual Dublin, Cork, Galway etc with little or nothing in between bar major roads and m-ways? Because I had been thinking about getting a TomTom unit except their website does not even list Ireland as having any coverage at all? Mick |

Denis - my brother uses the same gps system in Germany, and reckons it's a GIGO unit (Garbage In, Garbage Out); as long as you program it right, it'll get you to your destination. He seems to find it pretty good. Don't know about downloading maps - haven't felt the need to try yet (I'm not the sharpest tack in the box, so I get other people to do things like downloads for me!!). Nigel - I don't think it's been a government conspiracy; afaik, there's a huge drive on at the moment (pardon the pun) to get the mapping completed. |

Fey,
Any idea how detailed the maps for Europe are? The Aldi website says it covers the major roads in Western Europe... does it cover major cities at street level or just motorways? Just wondering if it would be any good for making your way around Paris for example?! Also, can you download new maps from the manufacturer? If so, are they expensive? Sorry for all the questions... don't know much about this stuff! |

Wasn't it in the Irish Times motoring section about 6 weeks ago that the entire country is to be mapped by Christmas of this year? I kept the article somewhere so can check the date and the company who are doing the mapping. It's certainly on the way though... HERE'S the link to the report.
