Chip & map work done.

Have since done about 150 or so miles.

Idle is super smooth, in fact the car feels much smoother overall as a result.

Whilst cruising mpg on the OBC climbed, not used to that.....!

After 10 miles or so with a nice warm engine I gave it some beans, definitely feels sharper in its more 'instant' response, the effect of another 23 bhp I'm sure I'm feeling through my butt - quick brake, cars in front are going really slow, I'm (allegedley) well into 3 figures without having noticed! Hmmm, me likes!

Jayson (based around the corner from me, chippeduk.com) has done a good job so far as I'm concerned.
He was saying that the ECU chip in this late M30 is one of the most restrictive of BMW's range, the way it went afterwards is testament to his comments so far as I'm concerned.

Me happy! Very Happy Very Happy

He's since done my 95 E34 520 with superb results as well.
My 635's.

Those chips do work well. The trouble with the
Highline (and any post 87 BMW) is that it's catalyst
prepared - even though UK cars don't have one. That
means the mixture is very lean and the spark
retarded to get the catalyst good and hot as fast as
possible - the leaning the mixture or retarding the
timing increases combustion temperature would you
believe.

A lean mixture didn't help the highline engines economy - my 84 635 is definitely more economical!

I was going to get mine chipped, but I got it fished instead. The results generally aren't as good but it goes better in the wet. ;-)

That's the silly thing - the lean mixture to make them
meet emissions laws actually makes them worse
on fuel - because you need more pedal to get it
going.
Generally, rechipped cars that are given the fuel and
timing they need are better on fuel.
In contrast you'd gain relatively little from rechipping
an old metal bumper 635CSi.

Thanks - interesting!

Funnily enough another member is in discussion with chippeduk.com about such a change, although I understand there are less gains to be had, any gain may be better than nothing, cost dependant of course.

My 84 car is currently devoid of MOT, need to do a bit of remedial tin-worm work!!

I might be being a bit thick, but has mine actually got a chip?
And so says Jimbob.
1981 635csi 81k miles. Will be fixed, but not by me.

Sort of - it's Motronic version 1 but the ECU's are not
chippable. It might be possible to use a later ECU to
remap but to be honest, you won't gain a lot. These
were the days before emissions regulations went
silly. At that age it really wants to be left alone!

Jimbob:

It seems your version of Bosch Motronic is this one:

Bosch 002, ML1.1
BMW 12 14 1 274 643 (from ETK info)
E23 735i 9/80 - 9/82
E24 635CSi 9/80 - 5/82

"Bosch 002" refers to the last three digits of the Bosch reference number usually found as a sticker on the ECU casing. "ML1.1" is the Motronic version number.

Out of curiosity: how expensive was it, and are there any repercussions for the emissions test on the MOT?

Both our E34 & E24 are much improved & definitely worth spending the extra on getting them to run more smoothly, in a more optimal way in terms of engine performance - running a map that is fettled to the specific model & country etc, rather than running a generic map.

Jayson's the techie one, so if you need more info call him via Horsetans link.

I must add that I am a converted person. I really had no reason to think this, but previously I thought of chip'ping as the 'dark side' of engine tuning & probably not worth bothering with.

So now I will eulogise about the difference in feel & 'go' until the sun goes down!!!!!

Still a bit coy about how much you spent, Dave. That's what Simon wanted to know. The link to Jayson's site will show up his standard charges, true enough, but that doesn't say anything about special deals that he might be prepared to do.....

I'm sure Jayson will be willing to discuss any special deals with individual members...........

For the record I felt the prices were very good!

In that case, you might want to PM Simon about that

Didn't mean to touch any nerves. My curiosity stems from a growing list of things I must do, and a list of things I'd like to do. I wondered if I could afford to add the chip&map to things I'd like to do, given the size of the things I must do.

Jimbob, your ECU could well be an 0261 200 002
which is not chippable. My Alpina B9 3.5 had the
same ECU and guess what - the very same unit as
BMW supplied. Something like an 0261200 059 or
061 would be better, as long as they are the later
type.

I believe a certain horsey person is looking into this very thing (unless I'm very much mistaken) with Jayson at chippeduk.com!
