What is the general trend at Better Driving Days days for cars allowed?

Examples

Marlin kit car with E30 or E36 mechanicals

BMW shell with engine from another manufacturer. Sad example E34 with Nissan diesel)

BMW engine in another manufacturers shell. (Ultimate example McLaren F1)

Driver behaviour.

This comment was posted by a club member after a track day in Ireland.

"The only solution to this is to have all cars taxed, insuranced and NCT(if required) compliant unless it is a dedicated track car that has all the safety devices fitted is one way of ensuring some safer driving maybe."

NCT is Irish equivalent of MOT test. What would people with dedicated (but not with all the safety devices) track day cars have to say about this.

I think the person that made the comment was referring to safety devices like roll cages, fire extinguishers, safety seats, harnesses, cut out switches.

What comments are passed about driver behaviour at UK Better Driving Days.

Well, on the basis that P*rsch*'s were allowed to play at Silverstone, I'd say that anything goes!

Anything does NOT go-- if someone wishes to bring a special or a track only car along they have to provide details prior to any booking.

A driver and car condition info sheet is sent out to all entrants, and conditions of the meeting have to be agreed by signing--- and details of previous track days are required.Any poor driving will be reported by the circuit marshals over the Radio,s and the driver concerned will be brought in to the pits----

So does that mean that all cars have to road legal ie. tax, insurance and MOT/NCT which I believe is fair because somebody arriving with a track car on a trailer does not worry to much if they damage their car unlike someone who uses their car for everyday use and if some wally with a dedicated track car hits them they are ******

This was meant as a JOKE

(although I must admit that I found their presence at a BMWCC BDD day a bit odd - hope this is a reciprocal arrangement

Its all down to the organiser of the event.

Brian allows Porsches at Siverstone to get the entries up in order to make it pay.

Chris insists on BMW only at Cadwell.. racers and specials by prior arrangement only.

I will allow pretty much anything to come to Croft.. so long as it is driven by a Car Club member and that I deem it fit to take part.

There is absolutely nothing to stop you trailering your road car if you need the assurance that you will be able to get it home no matter what..
..but then again, if you drive like 'no matter what' I will flag you off anyway!

To my knowledge it must be a 'vehicle' with either a BMW chassis or engine.
In terms of the Irish NCT, as this is IMO an inherintly corrupt and unreliable test I would not use this as a means of deciding whether or not a car is road/track worthy. However, if an element of scrutiny is given to cars which are visibly 'different', then Im satisfied. Recently we had an E30 325i chassis modded to look like a Mk II golf (!) and still had the 325i engine. It also had a roll cage and some other stuff. Myself and Brendan Purcell gave it a quick check and were satisifed with it.

@topazman - we have had many people arrive with dedicated track cars. Just because they don't have road tax doesn't mean anything
See this ...

As for insurance - generally no road policy will cover track use so again i feel this is irrelevant.

All I wanted to get across was to stop the messers that arrived at the last day and went out on track in a car that had being parked up and went like Dukes of Hazzards around the track and those lads who went out in their everyday cars were more at risk from this kind of person who doesn't give a stuff if they crash their car into the wall or another car, then who does the poor victim turn to. At least if all cars and isn't that what these days are for so that BMW drivers can drive their everyday in use car a little bit faster and test its performance. If somebody has a dedicated track car then they should go to dedicated track days not Better Driving Days there is a difference or at least I thought there was. Pheww sorry for the long rant.

No - good point.
However, to prevent muppetry at the next BDD that I organise, I will ensure that there is 100% pre-payment and nobody can do it unless they pay up front. Furthermore, nobody can join the club just to do it.

Well done, I agree - this should apply to ALL BDD's!

Killian

Do you have the name/reg of the two muppets in particular that everyone is (deliberately not) referring to?

Will they be banned from future events?

Mick

I have all sign in forms. As for banning - I haven't thought about it. Either way they will not be messing at the next track day.

I joined the BMW Car Club 15 years ago just to do the trackdays!

How many do you need to make it pay.. can't you just keep it sweet with the guys you know? If you have to take on more then at least try to get friends and colleagues of your regular crew so you have an idea of who you are going to get.

Don't be afraid to use that black flag and send offenders home without a refund.. tell your marshalls what standards you expect and they will enforce them for you... did you have a marshalls briefing beforehand?

There is nothing worse than some d1ck-head upsetting your well organised event... it spoils it for everyone.
