My brake pedal in fairly soft in my e30 316 compared to my 98 e36

Are the pedals on e30`s soft? (Travel far)

Also when sitting idle when you press the brakes there is an air (hiss) sound from passanger side

If you turn engine off and pump pedal this sounds for around 4 times then pedal gets hard and there is no sound
When you restert the engine with foot on brake the pedal goes down a bit and it makes the Hiss noise

Is this normal?

Hi mate sounds to me like your vacuum servo  diaphragm or your non return valve which connects from your inlet manifold to the servo

well apparantly the sound is normal according to the guys of e30 zone

Hi PETE try the same thing that your local mot tester would check to see if your servo is working or not depress the brake pedal several times then start your engine the pedal should start to sink a bit other thing you could do it will make the engine sound a bit rough while your testing it disconnect the pipe from the vacuum unit and see if it changes anything of course this is only a suggestion hope this helps as a slight split in your vacuum will most likely sound as if you got a snake in there

Pete i had a e30 316 1988 e reg and the brake pedal was a little soft and did travel a bit i was told it was a characteristic of the car.

You can adjust the shoes at the back which will bring the pedal travel a bit higher.

Mine does this too, slightly un-nerving until you realise that everything looks fine and the brakes work fine. Pedal may be soft due to really old brake fluid or air that needs bled out, they are susceptible to this. Fluid change and bleed every 2 years is recommended.

This is normal. With drum brakes you get this initial travel. Try standard hard on the brakes (when stationary) to try and get the rear adjusters to move a cog or two.

The last pragraph indictaes that your brakes and servo are working correctly.  If you have a lot of travel on the pedal, change your brake fluid.  This can help sometimes but not always.

If after bleeding the brakes you find the pedal to be the same, your master cyinder is probably worn.

Badly adjusted drum brakes can cause excessive pedal travel and although drum brkaes might be self adjusting, are you sure they are working?

Finally, some cars, especially older designs have excessive pedl travel from the factory, unless you know that brakes on these cars didn;t suffer from these probelm, you should bear that in mind.
