Hi guys,

Hope you are all well.  I have a slight problem.

I just went up to the chipper to get my takeout, to get back for the United game. The car (2000 323 ci) was fine going up, and when I came back out, she won't start. I get this clicking sound when I turn the ignition, and the lights pulse. Then what sounds like the aircon starts to whir up, and eventually goes quite again.

Is this a flat battery, or something worse?  Is it the immobilizer? Maybe the battery in the key is gone? Although, it opens the car ok?

I'm stumped. I had to leave the car and walk home!

Sorry to bug!

Carroll.

sounds like a flat battery to me

could also be a dead starter but I doubt it as your car is fairly new

Yep, had it happen to me a few times - short journey may have flattened it. It may have had enough juice to start it once but not had time to charge it up again hence not starting it a second time.

Yup flat alright. Happened to my bro the first day he got his 330cic.

I was at his place and he was outside playing with his car, opening the roof and what not. When I came out to get him to go to the shops and get something and wanting to take the car for a drive it would not start.

Same symptoms.

So kids, don't play with your new cars for extended periods of time the first night you get it. Battery is most proberly drained and needs to be charged, or maybe just don't open and close the roof so many times.

Caroll it's kinda weird that the car went dead just after it had be driving and only been left for a few minutes tho.

Sounds like a dodgy starter solenoid to me.

If the car is a manual, pop it in to 2nd gear and try rocking it back and forth (with handbrake off!).  It may just free it up to get you started again but if its acted up once, it'll do it again, so a replacement starter is likely the order of the day.

Yeah I had the problem before with a poor connection to the battery after I went over a bump in the road. I ended up having to get out of the car at traffic lights to re-connect it.

Having the same problems at the moment.  Dead cell in the battery means it discharges quickly and will not take short journeys with the headlights on. New battery time me thinks.

I just gave her a jump start, and away she went. It's automatic, so no rocking back and forth.  I might get the battery changed, as I believe the car was off the road for a while before I got it, and my wife had already run the battery down on a previous occasion. Plus, the car isn't getting a whole lot of use at the moment.

What kinda money are we talking for a new battery?  Joe Duffy the place to go?

Thanks guys!

Otto are in Ranelagh as you head outbound they are on the right at the end of the village.
GSF are just off the Nangor Rd. which is just off the Naas Rd.
They sell OEM and similar products but not at dealer prices.

Great stuff lads. Thanks a million.

Just as an addition to my original post, it was a total waste trying to get home for the United game!  :(
