OK so I need a new set of discs and pads for the front, I have looked at www.gsfcarparts.com and they have a set of cross drilled discs and Textar pads for £120.44 delivered. Has anyone used these before? Are then any good?

Also, how easy is it to change the brakes on these 5's , I've done it on my celica a few times but these beemers are a bit more complex :-)

Thanks guys!

There was an article in one of the recent TotalBMWs where they mentioned Textar discs and pads and they did rate them so I'd take that as a good endorsement.

As for changing discs n pads-I'd get my indy to do it.

When I changed my brakes on the M3, I went for Zimmermann Drilled front disc with fast road pads (came as an offer) and solid zimmermann for the back with fast road pads - IIRC, didnt pay much over £100 then!

Some people have had a bad experience with Zimmermanns cracking, but touch wood, mine have been excellent.

I heard that textar breaks are OEM supplied to BMW, but tend to squeal despite the use of copper grease...I had them on my old 325iS, a little squeal but too hard!

Two words - COPPER GREASE

Everything should then be fine.

Replacing brake pads and discs? Quite a straight forward job provided you have the right tools. The biggest problem I found was loosening those hard nuts holding the brake calipers in place.
(I had the usual problem of inefficient parking brakes. I cured it by removing the rear discs and bushing up the inner parking brake surface and reassemble - Job done - hand brake back to full efficiency.)

well, all done...

This was the easiest brake swap I have ever done on any car! everything was free and unseized and almost all came apart and went together how it should...

A few things though...

Glad I had a star drive set as the caliper slider bolts have this type of head.

The brake sensor seems to have been damaged by heat/time and when removing from the old brake pads the plastic plug on the end snapped and would not go back onto the new pads!

Some hamfisted moron in the past has cross threaded the disc retainer screw on the drivers side so although it was screwed in as far as possibe it was not actually holding the disc! left this off when re-assembled, just made getting the wheel on a bit more fiddly.

Finally, and the thing that really pissed me off! The brakes still shake like mad when applied at speeds over 50 mph and the steering still has the notcy feel!

P.S. copper grease is now here, there and everywhere :-)

Thanks for your help guys!!!  and lilcartman ! ;-)

Mark

Shaking through the steering wheel under braking may well be related to the control arm bushes. Certainly on the E34 (mine included) these bushes regularly wear, leading to all sorts of shaking through the steering. Apart from the control arms, there are all sorts of other bushes which can wear (idler arm is another common one).

I don't want to sound patronising but another possibility is that there is something stuck under one of the new discs - it's worth taking the time to make sure all the surfaces are *absolutely* clean and flat before putting the new discs on. Even a small particle in there can make the discs run off true.

Good luck!

Cheers Martin, I thought the same about something being stuck under the disc so when the old ones were removed the hubs were given a good clean and degrease (on the outside) and then a liberal coating of copper grease :-)

May try the bushes next as even it is not them they could probably do with being swapped, im just hoping and praying that the steering rack is OK!!
