Not a happy bunny today.

Hit a very big pothole yesterday, which caused a massive compression on the rear offside. The tire blew out and the rim is wrecked (slightly pringled) which isn't too bad, but I can't get any gears.

If I try to engage a gear, I can feel the clutch is ok and when approaching the bite point, I can feel the driveshaft turning but the gear won't engage fully and slips at idle with the car in gear and stationery....accompanied by massive crunching noises. I can get reverse but with a metallic crunch every 5 ft or so.

Have I broken my diff?

I did something similar when I broke a ball joint but that was on a FWD car.

Sorry to hear that.

I hope you've gone back and taken photos of the area so that you can get the council to pay up for the repairs.

Absolutely right. Phone the council in the first instance and see if you can get a highways engineer to come out with you. Try to get them to pay for the repairs rather than go to your insurer.

I have something similar happen to me, went over a deep pot hole and dented two of the alloys and blew the tyres.

Took pictures of the offending pot hole and damage and complained to the council.

There reply was that the roads are checked every 2 months. They cannot check the roads every day therefore and they cannot be held responsible for deteriation of road surfaces between the inspections! how sh*te is that!

Within 2 week of complaining the pothole was filled in!

I had a similar thing a few years back, the road I use to get home had a hole that was fastly getting bigger, and it got to the point where I had to go real slow over it or damage the undertrays on my M3, well despite telling them and asking for them to fill it in, nothing happened, so I told them that if it did any damage what so ever to my car due to their neglegence I'd sue them for the money.
They didn't, and I did. Got the whole undertrays replaced due to damage inflicted by the state of that road, and then the hole was filled in!

It's bo*****s what they say about inspecting the roads, they don't have the time nor the people to do it, so they don't bother, they repair on complaint or through necessaity, so carry on the fight.
