ive a rattle which i think is coming from the heat sheild/gaurd that run's between my exhaust and prop-shaft?

has anyone else had this and can i remove it without replace'n it??

i only get the rattle when i hit bump's and rough road surface (dosen't have to be to rough though)...but it's really "doing my head in" ive just bought this car and want rid of this rattle.

PS i can only hear it when a window is open

thank's  Ian

I wound not say to remove it ,as the heat from the exhaust will dry out the rubber propshaft dounut.

Best to find where it has come loose and fix it.

ive been under it 5 time's in 2 day's...all the fixing's are secure it's the actual sheild that is rattle'n. it's as if the layer's that the sheild are made of have parted and are rubbing against each other?

(hope this make's sence?)

thank's....Ian.

I could be wrong but I had a rattle as you discribe.

I looked everywhere the location of the sound was difficult to pinpoint

Bugger..

I couldn't find it but, whilst checking my lower track rod ends I noticed the metal inner disk protector was almost touching the front track rod (nearside). It was about 1 mm away, I gave it a tap and found the rattle / clang that had been giving me a headache since I bought the car.

all I did was push the dust protector away from the track rod end by about 4 mm. It's only a thin guard. This cured the noise, is it possible that this is a common problem

I'm sure I have read on here about rattles from 523i's coming the cat.  It might be worth checking that out.

My rear heatshield is loose and it vibrates a bit but it is obvious when you are under the car as the shield has corroded away around the fixings.  I would need a large diameter washer to re-secure it.  Another job to do once I have sat my exams, sigh.

With regard to re-fixing the rear guard (i assume over the back box) i bought some replacement nuts from BMW and they look like big washers, but the beauty was they screwed straight on and only cost me about £2.50...

Just a thought!!

ive checked all 4 dust gaurd's and had to repair a front one......but the rattle is still their!

well after taking half the front bumper apart and removing the belly tray from bellow the engine.......rattle was still their!!

so i decided "stuff it" wheel off, caliper + disc off then dust gaurd off, all put back together without the dust gaurd and.......YEEE HAAA ...rattle is now gone  i now have a gaurd free front N/S disc but boy is it worth it  ...thank's for your help guy's.

funny thing is though i checked each gaurd at least 5-6 time's and they all seamed fine (except the driver's side front...which i fixed)
