 Topic: ZM Coupe - Starting / running rough

I have a 2000 ZM coupe with 39,000 mile on the clock and it has developed a starting problem - when starting form cold it rev's itself round to anything between 2,000 - 4,000 revs and stays there for around 30 - 40 sec before dropping back to around 1500, then it will go down to around 500 revs almost cut out and rev itself back up to 1500 and keep doing this. Sometimes it will do this while it is hot - embrassing at the traffic lights!
It's been into my local BMW dealer around six times over the last 3 months and has had a new idle valve - no difference, a new engine management unit (I think thats what they called it) ran lovely for a week then back to square one.
Has anyone had a similar problem or any ideas - I'm getting desperate, warranty about to run out! Thanks

I had this on a 96 EVO coupe, they ended up changing the throttle bodies ( thank god for the warranty) and this solved the problem. Before that they changes all sort of sensors, ICV, oli rebreather(?), hoses, pipes. Total bill was around �3000!

Thanks, i'm glad that someone has had a similar problem, the car won't play up when the main dealer has it, or so they say, and I'm sure they think i'm exaggerating (I don't think being a woman helps)! I'm not very familair with the technical stuff but am I right in thinking that my ZM has the same engine as your EVO?

I've had a similar probelm recently on my 96 Evo that a service cured, it was running like a bag of nails but it back to normal now.
M-Mand, the M coupe or breadvan does hav ethe same engine as the M3 Evo. or the same as 1/2 a Maclaren F1s V12

Sounds like a sticky throttle spindle in need of a little oil.
The M Coupe/EVO engine is not quite half a Maclaren, the main differences being that the Maclaren engine has a shorter stroke, which means that even at the same peak power rpm (7400 rpm) the piston speed is lower. It also has longer connecting rods, so the piston acceleration is also lower, thereby reducing the inertia loadings on the big end bolts etc. The compression ratio is also slightly lower, and the power output (divided by 2) is 'only' 300 bhp.
In other words, it is a rather better version of the EVO engine, with lower mechanical and thermal loads.

I stand corrected, I should have said it's essentially 1/2 a Mclaren F1s V12.
