You should find you have a little less tramlining with the slightly narrower fronts.

Either way, enjoy your new found grip!

Cheers Graham, I.ve just read through the posts again & I think it quite understandable for someone to get mixed up.

I am sure 235/45/17 & 255/40/17 are as near as damm it the same circumference. If you go to the millimeter I should have gone for 225/45/17 to the front, but because I was replacing 240 width tyres I went for the size closest.

You want the rolling circumference to be as close as possible to the original which was 1982.6mm (240/45x415 TRX).

A 255/40 rolling circumference is 1997.7 so is + 0.8% compared to the original.

A 255/35 rolling circumference is 1917.6 so is - 3.4% compared to the original.

These are "ideal world" sizes as tyres from different manufactures can differ slightly.

Were your TRX's the older 390 diameter?

40 profile on a 235 is OK but 40 on a 255 is larger than what was on.

The rears are too low a profile, they should be 255/40.

Sossy my mistake, I have 235/40/17 to the front & 255/35/17 on the rear which are as close as you can get to the circumference of what was on.

By the way I have four as new standard wheels with brand new Michelin metrics if anyone is interested.

On a seperate note I have found a supplier in Germany who has plenty of BMW part mudflaps.

Taken from the diff I believe.

255/40 x 17 have the same rolling circumference as the 240/45 x 415 TRX's so I've kept one as a spare. Don't know the implications of having two different sized tyres on the rear with a lsd but I'd rather not find out.

For looks as well, IMO. Its important to keep close to the original total hight for the speedo etc - but is that front or back?

235/45 x 17 has a taller sidewall height than a 255/40 x 17, that's why I fitted 235/40's at the front & 255/40 x 17 at the rear.

A slightly nose down stance is preferable to slightly nose up if you want to keep high speed stability.

I've got Alpinas on my M6. 8" x 16" on the back and 7" x 16" on the front (8" were too wide for the front) Still got the original wheels and 4 almost new TRX's for originality purposes.

I also have another two 16" x 8" Alpinas, brand new with centre caps, if anyone is looking.

Steve.

You are a glutton for punishment, so!

235/45/17 will fit

255/40/17 may give you rubbing issues in front.....

Are you not allowed a test fit? 8x16 sounds like an Alpina alloy....
