How do I know?! Because it's mine!

Over the last couple of days I have been filming an episode of the upcoming series of Fifth Gear in which Tiff tracks my M3.

Afraid I didn't get any great pics due to the filming taking place but it was a cool couple of days and I got the opportunity to take in a few laps of the circuit with him which was pretty amazing- as you well know, he sure can drive!!  Plus they let me borrow a spanking new XJR for a couple of hours [:p] (well, should have been about an hour but the sat nav is rubbish!)

Should be shown mid-October.

He was really impressed with the car (well, that's what he said to me, hopefully he says the same on camera!) - especially considering my particular example has about 285,000km on the clock- and raved about the sharpness of the responses and the lack of slack in the gearbox and steering.

Here's a couple of rubbish pics!

And one of my girlfriend offering technical advice after the XJR got a little warm-

Thats a mag and a TV program now. Are you in the business and did they give you a tape of the footage?

That's 2 magazines and a TV show

I just replied to something one of the researchers posted on the E30zone- guess I was just the first guy to reply with a suitable car and I had the professionally taken magazine shots to e-mail him so that probably helped.  It also helps that my car is bone stock apart from the exhaust I guess.

I got the BMWCar feature through their forum and the PPC one before that... erm, I can't remember!

Next I'm planning- Aaron's M3: The Musical

AaronM3,

Your car looks good, coming forward to seeing on the small screen.

Are you trying to catch up with my car, 3 mags and 1 TV appearance, Top Gear Mag, Used Car Buyer & Evo and on Scrap Heap Challenge......

Was the Jag the only one to overheat on the day?

All the Jag Supercharged cars seem to have a bit of a problem. Apparently the S-Type R will only do a lap and a half of the ring at full chat and then it needs to be left to cool for an hour. Wouldn't be much good as a ring taxi.

Hi there, great to see more exposure of these great cars.

Was there a head to head test on the track, or just a one off report of your car?

I like it when they superimpose 2 similair cars on film and see who comes out on top.

Cheers, Gary

Is this the one beaten by the Integrale 16v?

Lifted from another forum....

Quote "Hello all,

When I volunteered for my 16v to be in a 'magazine' article, I never imagined i'd end up spending 2 days with the Fifth Gear team and having Tiff Needell going for it in my car!.

Up until now the Fifth Gear shootouts have always been between new cars and its great publicity for integrales that the first (and so far only) older cars featured are to be a 16v and an E30 M3.

As the day of filming approached, I started to worry about my car getting beaten, or breaking and having to report back news of defeat.
People kept telling me what a good track car the M3 is and it didnt help matters knowing that Tiff is a raving BMW lover.

Tiff went out in the M3 first and to be fair it looked brilliant, a really well balanced car and when he came back in he was full of praise about how tight the car felt.

After asking me a few questions about the car, Tiff set off in the Integrale to set a lap time and after seeing my car go past a few times, I realised it was going to be close.

In the end victory for the Grale by around .2 of a second on a flying lap of the 1.2 mile Angelsea circuit, which considering the M3 was doing what it does best and the Lancia (in standard form at least) what it does worst, was a good result.

Although I never felt my car was the underdog, it was telling that everyone watching assumed the M3 would win and I was suprised just how suprised people were by the integrale.

Apart from being biased towards rear wheel drive cars in general and BMW's in particular and thinking Lancia cheated their way to six WRC's with the integrale, Tiffs really not a bad bloke.

Tiff was quite impressed that the M3 and Integrale got through the 2 days without breaking, as several other cars filmed did'nt. A Mitsubishi Evo which had its clutch fail 2 weeks earlier, got through yet another one. £70k's worth of Jag XJR sport kept overheating after only a few laps. One of the shootouts was between a Suzuki Swift and a Peugeot Compressor (a 125cc supercharged scooter, driven by a motorcycle news journalist), Tiff managed to find the Suzuki's 1st gear at about 70mph and bent a few valves. Peugeot had removed the centre stand off the scoooter to improve cornering, but all that then happened was a hole got ground in the sump. An overnight repair with araldite meant the scooter could be filmed again, until it finally got crashed !.

Programme should go out mid October, will let you know when sure of the date."

At least you've taken it well.  You'd be suprised how many Beemer owners cannot handle the fact of getting beaten by another car, no matter what it is!

Car looks great, look after it!
