Topic: RHD E30 M3 Posted: 22-May-2003 at 13:38 |
An oppurtunity has arisen whereby I can buy an 88 m3 which has been professionaly converted to RHD. It is an Irish car in Red with 75k. I haven't negotiated a price yet but I would like peoples comments/views on whether I should buy or no, what price you think I should pay and if I would be better off going across the water for one.
I have heard stories of m3's loosing 20-30bhp because a custom manifold has to be made up, but I have been assured that there is no loss of power to this car.
Reason for selling: Buying an e30 320is from Italy!!!
Better still if you know of an e30 m3 for sale so that I could do a comparision well great

Eamo, just out of interest, what do you mean 'professionally converted'? Is there a company (recognised by BMW) that performs these conversions? Also, does a LHD -> RHD conversion have implications when you're insuring the car? Is this something that you need to make your Insurance Co. aware of?
Just wondering....

I've heard these should be avoided like the plague - much like the Delta Integrale conversions.
The steering rack is generally taken from the 325i, and the driving characteristics suffer greatly as a result.
Bit of a coincidence though because a mate was just offered a RHD M3 conversion, the guy aparently told him that BMW did the job themselves!!! Bit of a tall tale me thinks - I'd imagine you'd have a lot of trouble selling it too (not that you're buying it to sell on, but you know what I mean). I reckon if you're after an E30 M3, LHD is part of the package...

Dalts
To answer your first question - BMW do not oficially recognise any company to do these conversions. When I say that the job was professionally converted, I mean that the job was carried out by a company who specialise in this area and not some mickey mouse mechanic who tried to do the job himself in his makeshift garage.
In relation to your second question - I'm going to insure it as a 316!!! |Only joking. Insurance companies only have have makes and models of cars on their databases. The database does not tell him whether its LHD or RHD. However, when you go for a quote they do ask if the car is LHD and my answer then would be no and therefore would not be subject to the extra loading that people incur from LHD cars!!
Hopefully this clears everything up for you.

Thanks Eamo...does k's reply suggest that nobody can convert these professionally, particularly if they're using 325 parts?
Sounds like whether the conversion is done in johnny half-pipe's backstreet garage or by Karl Rapp himself, the end result is still the same - a hybrid motor....... or maybe a hybrid monster.... : )

I would be very surprised if there was an M3 for sale at €5k and the owner was getting it hard to sell!
I looked at another 88 m3 for €7k (it was water damaged) but was sold before I could get my mechanic to look at it

I wouldn't be surprised to be honest - not too many people want RHD conversions.
I sent the guy a mail to get a phone number off him... will let you know it as soon as I get it

Can't argue with that Eamo...I'd certainly be happy with a couple of hundred ponies under the hood. Good luck if you go for it.
