Just been out for a gentle burble in the e23.

80mph, clang, kerching, then a scraping sound.Hmmn. stopped asap.Squeaking as loudly as car was while i did so!lol.Quick look revealed nothing, Drive home even slower, finally found it, the pins which hold the rear handbrake shoes on had come through backplate+ everything inside was mangled/twisted+battered.

Im feeling pretty pleased really, could of been so, so much worse, because rather than lock the wheel, it chose to imbed itself into shoes, which are now cream crackered. If it had gone onto edge of shoe, it would of locked.nice. get checking those backplates chaps, not a nice experience. hole should be round, with a good slot through, if its out of shape, im hoping to find a 'button' other cars use that i can put in instead.

thanks for posting Simon. I've not come across this E23 problem before.

What caused the incident to occur do you think?

On closer inspection,I think it was caused by the guy attempting to 'wiggle' the backplate at mot time. must of dislodged the pin that holds pads in position, allowing it all to move.nice!

Either that, or pin wasn't seated in the groove properly, when last changed. difficult to be precise,as its all mangled.

Dont mean to go on, but the pins rotting off is quite common on older cars, i never cheapskate with brakes+ always replace shoes/pads+ anything that holds them with new parts.

Another thing, i've hunted through owners manual+ can't find what the switch to left of steering wheel, in line with column adjuster does! Also, whats the button between window switches+ seat adjusters only on drivers side????

the first one is the electrical isolator switch which cuts power to the elec windows I think. In the event of an overload the switch will trip to protect the motors. you then reset the switch to restore the power.

the other button might be the isolator for the rear door window switches in the door cards, to stop your kids playing with the windows.

they are mentioned in the Owners Manual somewhere, but only briefly.

2pm should be fine Mark.

VJ is off the road again

exhaust joint has bad leak

also VJ lacks a bootlid at the moment. I am in the process of swapping a non-rusty lid onto the car. they are damned heavy and you really need an assistant.

all part of the joys of classic car ownership???

Have you ever noticed that the heavier+ more awkward the part is, the less the likelyhood of assistance?

Or those joyfull 'one man eazi-bleed' type kits for doing the brakes, that drive you to distractioin, by coming off+ letting more air into the system than you started with!

Then as you pack up, help arrives....

I'm about 80 miles from you, but you are most welcome to come over and I will pay your petrol. Help will be much appreciated. Rob used to help me but he don't like E23's anymore

The E28 is just waiting to be taxed & insured. I may do this this month.

then I must sell the E32 as I will not need it anymore

How about next Sat or Sun? We can try to remove a jammed elec seat from the Silver Surfer. they are a swine to get out if the motors wont move the seat fore & aft

I will lay on some refreshments, many thanks.

tomorrow I will bring the mountney boss if you still want it.

also, free boot spoiler if you want one. I hate them as they seem to cause rust where you bolt them to the bootlid

Phil, just a long shot, Shogun put up a post recently about how quick it is to change the bootlid on the e32 - no bolts, just catches. Just wonder if that design carried over from the e23?
