Help help help, following a little off road excursion in the freshly MoT'd 525e I need to track down the following - two front wings, a bonnet, a portion of drivers inner wing, an entire front panel and a bumper. Oh, and a drivers headlight. Clearly most of these bits would be best coming from a scrapped car, preferably something with a serious rear end shunt that I could just cut the front panels out of.

My poor girl has had an encounter with a motorway sign at 50mph and now needs a slight facelift, the bodyman who is looking after her would really like to scrap her because of her age, but I want to keep her on the road as pre-accident she was certainly one of the nicest E28s still on the road. Mechanically everthing is still running perfectly, in fact if the front panel were pushed away from the wheel she could be driven quite happily.

Can anyone out there help my quest for parts? To be honest distance isn't too important, I'll just take the van down. It is essential that the panels are in good straight rust-free condition, as I don't want to be paying a body man a fortune to dress panels. Also colour isn't important as they will be resprayed, however a full set of luxorbeige bits would be very nice! I am truly gutted. Someone please help me.

Please dont take this the wrong way, but you can pick these cars up for peanuts nowdays, so if your intent on spending out on yours why not just buy a second one strip it of all the bits you need and then scrap it,an e28 520 was up for sale for ages along from me, the guy only wanted £200 for it, no tax but mot`d for 5 months he never sold it ,i watched a low loader take it away ,when i see him he told me he got £25 ,ok it weren`t a1 but it was no wreck

Several e28's on the 'cars for sale' section of BMWCC site.

Sorry to hear of your grief here Doive. Be realistic about the costs of a repairing your to buying another. It may be better to keep your damaged car as a donor.

That's a shame Doive, you haven't had that car on
the road for long have you? I know you love that car
but maybe B8alk has hit on something.... there must
be a fair few good e28's for sale. Even my father in
law has a black 528 just standing about. It sounds
like your car has had most of the front smashed in.
Who's to say that when you take all the damaged
panels off you don't find even more damage? This
could be really costly to repair, and respraying to get
a perfect colour match will be a nightmare, but it's
your car - your money.
Cheers,

Shaun

Cheers chaps, I have received all your much appreciated PM's. Sadly I'm at home fighting with dial-up, so I don't get on the forum as often as I'd like. Still trying to decide what to do - I hear the guys who say to scrap it, but I'm a bit naive and reckon it won't be too horrendous to fix. I'll have a look at panels to see what prices are like.

Donor car is the way to go, but reconsider using yours as a donor mechanicals - bodywork is usually expensive.

Broadband: you must get, try PlusNet or Virgin.

Doive,

I had similar decision to make with putting the 528 through MOT - couldn't find an exhaust for love nor money. Then the 530 came up and has been a bargain at £475. Has been stuck in traffic, with no overheating and a very silky smooth auto box and air con that works! Bargain in my eyes!! Hope things go well in your way - you may be able to get body panels through GSF/ECP. Not that expensive I don't think - I was going to get a new wing for the car and was £30+vat.

Paul

Been on ECP and I can get the majority of the panels for about 200 quid. However, these are pattern parts and I have been warned in the past that fitting pattern parts is likely to cost as much in fettling as it will to fit genuine stuff. I still would like to save the car, but is it a particularly rare model? I haven't seen any type of E28 on the road now for about two years, and knew nothing about an eta Lux model until it appeared on the log book! I've never seen another one anyway. Decision time, hopefully with a little help and advice.

I would fix it M8, as thay are hard to fined and in you couler and modal, yes it will cost more to repair than fined another clean one but people still do it to MG's ect,

At the end of the day you have spent money and time on her already and you know the car and its faults and when the works dun you will have a even cleaner e28, witch has got to be Worth the effort and thats a lovely feeling,

I do with mine as I need new doors and rear arches but it has had new callipers and break linings and I would never fined another like it

Good luck and stick with it

Hello mate, the e28 525e lux was a mass produced model in its time,i might be wrong but the 525e was badged accordingly because of the engine fitted, less power but more fuel effecient apparently, and lux was just a spec name in day of e28`s,, but all this is irrelavent, a car can easily become a money pit if your not careful ,im trying to knock your feeling towards your car, but what happens if heaven forbid you spend all this money on a car that is niether desirable nor ever going to return any money back to you and the same thing happens again? which it could quite easily, im not trying to be nasty to you but on the whole its just not worth it, not to you as a owner ,as you could so easily replace it with a much better model either e28 or e34, and definately not for resale ,and i appreciate this is not in your mind now but it will be one day, what has happened is really very sad ,most would just claim on insr, but obviously this is not an option for you joys of owning an older car im afraid, if it were a 635 highline or the likes of then yes, thats an old car thats got value, but sadly the only value yours has got is to you, personaly if it were me i would put it down to a sad happening and move on, going with my head not my heart.

Sorry fella

not meaning to be cruel

good luck with what ever you decide Andy.

That not the point off most classic cars Restoring them is not to make money but to have fun and enjoy them and for other people to.  Not that many people enjoy e23's cus thay don't but I restoring mine not to make money but to enjoy the car worthless but pretty rear now and it is costly but well worth it and I would have it no other way. My car is worthless mint, or wreck and it's probably the later of the too

Please help me
