Mer or Meguiars?

I've gone from merr to Auto Proud, I came across it at the stoneleigh bash in April

and its British made !!

If you're used to the "one bottle does all" ease of Mer you'll hate the others, which range from two to I don't know how many steps to complete.

I used to use Mer and found it to be really good especially if you're running a car that's doing a lot of motorway work, it seems to last for ages before needing to be done again.

I've recently switched from Autoglym to Zymol and think it's great.... wifey likes the smell of the zymol and doesn't mind washing the car!!! I only have to wax it now which makes Zymol a winner for me!!

I use Autoglym and elbow grease.  Shampoo, Resin polish on and buff off then Extra Gloss protection on and buff off.  Basically Green labelled bottle followed by red labelled bottle followed by gold labelled bottle and the result is.......

This picture was taken in middle November 2004 just after I had washed the car with Autoglym shampoo about 1 month after polishing it.

My car pictured above had only been polished once with the two stage Autoglym stuff about one month before this picture.  I then wash the car with Autoglym Shampoo every week and it restores this shine every time.  I have only polished my E39 twice now!

Picture was taken after washing as above and drying with a chamois, you can tell I've just washed it as the brake discs are rusty looking.

What I am trying to say is that if you put time and effort in with any polish you can achieve a really good standard. 

A lot of people have said Autoglym isn't the best (not necessarily on this post!) and that things like Zymol etc is better.  I have only ever used Autoglym so I can't comment. 

Reading this post earlier I have thought about using Zymol but I have loads of Autoglym bottles to use up and they are quite expensive to buy them all in one go but one bottle every other month is o.k.

I think I'll maybe try the Zymol next.  That's a shampoo isn't it?

Yes, Zymol is a shampoo, I used Autoglym until recently but having seen Doive's results decided to give Zymol a go and was very impressed. Had intended to try Meguiars for some time but until recently was hard to come by around here, by coincidence at the same time I was running low on Autoglym found a Meguiars stockist. Got all sorts in the garage to use up, colour polish, autoglym will try some on different panels of 528 and see how it all goes.

Agree on elbow grease but have to use electric buffer now as can't stand for the time needed to do it all otherwise.

I tried it on a friends custom painted Calibra, did a good job but I think one went round putting polish on by hand while other followed buffing it off. Used it again on 525e but paint was so flat and scratched on that the improvement was marginal/

Are you sure you didn't put polish on too thick or left it too long? One panel at a time comes up OK, but I don't have much choice but to use the buffer with a "standing up" time of about an hour and 4 hours between painkillers, by the time I wash, dry and polish I'm in a lot od trouble or have to do it in bursts one hour work, two hours rest. Real pain when a job needs doing.
