Topic: 320d Turbo failure Posted: 01-June-2005 at 07:57 |
My brother was saying to me he heard from a friend that e46 320d turbos have a habbit of failing. I am thinking of buying a 320d and would be interested to know if this is the case or not? ie turbo's needing replaced on 320d at certain mileages [and not very high mileages]. If this is the case what mileage roughly would I need a new turbo on a 320d and how much is this job? Many Thanks D |

I did a search on google for "320d turbo fault" and came up with these two at the top of the list: extract from a forum thread on pistonheads: "2002 BMW 320D went off on the transporter at 30k'ish miles with Turbo failure (and the transporter driver knew what the failure was unprompted because he had seen so many)" extrac from Honest John's website - writes for the Daily Telegraph on Saturdays: "320D M47 150bhp models getting a reputation for repeated turbo failure, possibly due to extended oil service intervals. After replacing turbo, ECU needs to be reprogrammed. Also instances of injector failure." I have no personal experience of this model. |

I wonder if this ties in with our resisdent oil experts views..... " Indeed, I'm from the old school and although BMW Approved LL01 oils are supposed to cope with longer service periods than 12000 miles / 12 months due to narrow viscosities, synthetic technology and low shear rates, I've never been happy with the claims. My reasoning for this is based around the fact that additive packs get used up over a period of time and the oil becomes less effective as a package. I am always more comfortable with the old school thinking of 12000 miles or 12 months as the maximum oil change period. " Here is a link to the thread that was taken from.
http://www.bmwcarclubforum.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=8710&am p;PN=1&TPN=10 It would make sense that failures could be due to trying to over extend service intervals. After all turbos spin at such high speeds that the type and condition of the oil is critical.
