Is this event going to be run to the daft "No R Compound Tyres" rule or are we allowed to use proper track tyres ??

Well it looks like Brian has not taken any heed of not refering to our days as 'Track Days'

So maybe he will allow the tyres.. perhaps someone could give him a call and find out.

.. anyone off to Cadwell this Wednesday?

Does anyone know as yet if we can use the "R compound tyres" yet?  I have 17" Hartge's on mine, and i'm buying new wheels and Yoko A032R's for the track.  So I aint gonna track the Hartge's and I aint gonna buy another set of tyres, that i'll use once!

Cheers,

James

Nick,

Your event looks like a good day out, it makes sense to be able to learn a bit more about the car, esp as I haven't driven one for nearly 6 months.  Only problem is, I get back from the Algarve quite late on Sunday, so not sure if I can make it on the monday.

thanks,

James

Has anyone spoken to the Car club with reference to the "R" compound tyres?

If not, I will speak to them this week.

with respect, it is Brian Bradley that you need to speak to not 'the club'.

Brian is the organiser of the event.

Right, I have just spoken to Chris Waddsley:

He says that 'R' compound tyres will definately NOT be allowed on ANY BMWCC day next year.  Donnington, however, has not been agreed as yet, but the general concensus is that they will not be allowed there either.

I am pretty p155ed off!  I have just payed for a new set of 15's with Yoko A032R's on them!  Now I find out that I cannot go to Donnington this year, or any other "Better driving day" organised by the club next year!!!!!!!

Chris says that the other clubs, e.g. Drivers, have not addressed the issue over 'R' compunds as yet, and they may well follow suit.

What is everyone elses opinion??

Was there any warning of this in any Car Club literature??

James......Was there any warning? Nope.

I suppose by banning them, Chris is referring to next year? Nick is certainly allowing them at Croft this year. I believe that allowing these tyres is being left down to the individual track day organiser for this year at any rate.

The whole issue has been handled badly by the club. Why on earth hasn't Chris Wadsley been on this forum to explain what's going on? The only track day organiser (oh sorry.....better driving day organiser) who can be bothered to speak to the club members via the forum is Nick, who organises Croft.

This whole issue is getting tiresome. Would anyone from the club care to comment? (You don't have to Nick!) Or are none of you reading / using this forum?

John,

Chris said that they would definately be banned on all BMW CC events next year.  Donnington has not been decieded as yet, but Chris said that he wants them banned and the rest would agree.

I agree, Nick has been the exception, thank you Nick for taking the time to talk to us.  Any chance you can organise some events a bit further

south??  But Chris did say that Nick allows anything at his events.

The other option is that members who use 'R' compound tyres will cease to attend club events banning them!  This would not be good for the club!  Personally, I think the Club is great, generally well run with lots of variety.  But, if this rule about tyres is brought in, what is the point of being a member of a club that bans road legal tyres at club events??

James,

this is all in insurance thing..

basically, they do not want to cover us for 'trackdays'.. but 'better driving days' are seemingly ok.

If we cant get insurance cover we can't run them as a 'club event'.

.. a lot of other clubs do not have their own insurance.. they buy it as part of the circuit hire package and is getting very expensive.

Croft 'n Me know each other very well but they still wanted sight of our insurance certificate before they would let me proceed with our trackday.

You may have noticed that there 'aint many other clubs like ours doing trackdays anymore... there are plenty of commercial trackday organisations out there selling trackdays for profit.. look at the price they need to charge and how many other cars you will be sharing the circuit with.

... so back to the topic.. 'Better Driving Days'.. for regular members in regular cars.. we may be able to let a few 'tweaked' cars in at each event providing they are in the minority..but if we constantly keep allowing track prepared cars to use our 'Driving Days' then our insurers will take their bat and ball home.

Waddo, rightly or wrongly, sees the tyre thing as the way to go... if we don't allow the sticky tyres, the problem cars won't come and everything will be fine again.

.. it's all very awkward.. but for now, come to Croft and use those tyres while you still can!

oh.. I still want to run Croft'04, 05, 06 etc 'my way' so I will need to look at buying some insurance for the event... this will mean either;

a, It will cost each driver more

b, more cars at the event to make it break even.

This means that Croft'03 looks like it will be the last time we can run a big event with less than 50 cars..

... like I have said.. I still have a few places left... you really should think about coming.

Thanks for explaining it all Nick. I get it. Still, it's a shame about the tyres for the other circuits. But I understand about the insurance thing.

Cheers mate. See you on the 21st July.

Hi guys, I think I have found out what started all this Insurance/tyre problem out.

I was told this by one of my local BMW specialists, it happened last year.

There was a trackday at Cadwell Park, and some fool in a Ferrari 355 bined it into a wall.  He had trackday insurance, but when then insurance assesor arrived he discovered that there was some gravel on the track, invalidating the fool's insurance!  This ass*ole in the Ferrari then sued the marshall, responsable for that particular area, for £68,000.  As alot of you are probably aware, common sense, decency and the justice system are largely non-existant when it comes to legal action!  So the guy in the Ferrari won £68k from this unpaid marshall, who had given up hs own time to marshall an event due to his love of motorsport.  They marshall had to sell his house to pay the costs, and his wife divorced him.

So you can't really blame the CC for its stance over the insurance, but as per usual it is being spoilt by one person (in this case) for every other person that does track days!

Well seeing as I am "a problem car (not a pop at you, Nick)" I feel the easiset thing to do is not to renew my membership. So that's that. The bit of paper about the renewal has now been "filed".........

See you all on another list somewhere........

Unfortunately, I am in the same boat as Roops.  My new wheels and A032R’s are here this week, so I can’t do any Car Club Better Driving Days for the foreseeable future.

I understand the insurance thing, but these tyres are road legal!  How can the Car Club ban road legal tyres on a ‘Better Driving Day’??  If people drove there and back, would they be allowed??

Oh well, I am sure that all the above questions would have been answered, or at least discussed had this issue been made aware to the members…

I am still p155ed off that I bought a set of tyres to use at Car Club events, but when I get them, there is a sudden change, AND I CAN’T USE THEM!!!!  There was no warning from anyone!  I find it totally outrageous that the Club can ban things without consulting, or at least warning it’s members, I am not made of money!!

My gripe is not at the decision; it’s with the way this has been handled.

I can understand your rage about the tyre thing.. but they are only tyres.. short lived ones at that!

It's not so hard to get another set of wheels and tyres.. it's what I used to do and it pays dividends in the long run.

Racers are used to this sort of thing.. we get fed up with them changing which ones we can and can't use as well.

It's a shame you are bailing out Rupert... It's a shame when any member quits..

I like roops only keep my membership for one reason and that is for the clubs better driving days. This will obviously not now be renewed.Like James has said it was the way it has been done with total disreguard for its members. You can sit there and come up with soom crap about insurance issues about race prepaired cars etc.. but thats not what its about. How many race cars have you seen at a club run event? And if these are the problem it would not be hard to ban them. It`s an image issue and no one has got the bollocks to stand up an tell it like it is! They just want to run events like corporate days all ploding arround in their 7 series at 50mph with cries of Tally Ho as they crawl down craner curves braking hard for the old hair pin which when they are on a hot one can be taken in 2nd.

Sorry but this is not for me.

  Jon
