Dave emailed me some tasty photos of his new toy yesterday, so I've created him a webpage on my site to show them all off. She looks to be a good clean car, aside from the obvious bits of rust. Once it gets the new bits it will be very sweet indeed.

Maybe this is a stupid question.......

525e with a knackered cam (Etas were very prone to
cam lobe wear) which is unique to the 525e and no
other cam will fit. ECP no longer hold stock, £190
plus VAT from BMW.

And needs a body job.

WHY????????

I bought a grey 88E 525e Lux from the auctions last
night as I need a 2.7 short engine for my track car.
Diamond Black, dechromed, OBC, lovely engine and
gearbox, good interior, one wing and edge of bonnet
light bubbling. MOT till september.

Fifty quid plus £11 commission. Add a fiver for fuel
and it's £66 parked in the yard. Drives nice apart
from usual E28 brake shudder.

Christ, there are so many decent E28's for peanuts,
why did you and RubberKnees buy wrecks that need
loads of work..........when you could have just gone
out and bought a really tidy one for £3-400?

WHY???????????????

I'm about to scrap a better car than you're attempting
to fix.

Does that not tell you something about yourself?!

Take a few minutes to think about that, and where
you're going wrong.

And no father of mine would waste garage space on
an E28, 'old Son'

Doive, I think your 525e is great. That is such a good colour for them too - is it 'Champagne'?

IMHO, the 525e is the best 80's BMW all rounder that came off the production lines.

Andyboy, why aren't you flogging these vgc e28's? There are lots of 'mugs' like Doive out there!

It also says a lot about you. '88 shadowline/dechromed E28's are I believe rare, so gutting one that could be saved for the engine says a lot! Who's going wrong? You do it your way, we'll do it ours!

As it happens my 525e was my first BMW and I was assured by I thought reliable RAF contacts that it had been fully checked by MTSS and was solid. It also had near FBMWSH, MoT and tax. I paid £300 for it. As a "newbie" at the time I thought I had taken reasonable precautions. I learnt from the experience and moved on.

Andy, I'm not sure how to reply to your comments. Shadowline cars are indeed very rare, but as long as muppets are prepared to break them then they will continue to get rarer. Nothing I can do to stop that, but people like Ian, Dave and I are willing to spend our time and our hard earned keeping three old ladies of the road in fine fettle. As someone once told me: "What's that got to do with you?" If you don't like us doing it, well then that's fine. You don't have to tell us. I don't like you breaking eta cars for their engines to make yet another 2.7 E30 track car, but I don't go on at you incessantly about it. You don't understand why we love old smokers - GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON. You never will get it.

Eta, my car is luxorbeige metallic, not sure what that is in english but the colour looks superb when polished and may very well be one of the best E28 colours IMO. Andy, have a good look at the following picture (sorry to those who have seen this before) and tell me why this car is so bad. You appear to have no problems questioning where we have gone wrong, I'm open minded so care to enlighten me to the error of my ways? Check my website for more photos of my old heaps you can pour scorn over.

Tetley! Nice car.

Shame mine wasn't an auto as I'm letting her go cheap that you could have had. I've had mine two years now and fancy a change. Just bought an 89 (G) 530i and picking it up tomorrow.

Each to their own, but having been in the position of trying to sell cheap tidy e28s and e23s i would have to agree with andyboy. Doive your car(the 525e !) looks tidy and if you paid £150 for it and it has had no major issues, congratulations and keep your fingers crossed!. But tetley and rubberknees i can see your sad t*rds becoming money pits and £7-800 later  still being worthless scrap.  I do hope you persevere  though because i'm just about to dismantle an original e28 alpina b9 3.5 and an e28 M5(24V), both cars are rusty and tired with high mileage and  scrapping them is a much less stressful and financially rewarding option than restoring them and dealing with losers. So if any one wants a mint funky alpina cloth recaro trim, an m5 engine original 16"bbs etc etc pm me.  P.S i've got a mint bonnet and good bumpers tetley if your interested.

Hiab, I don't know if you've seen my car on Doives' website, but the bonnet and wing are the only major issues with it. The rest of the body is solid, I've had a crawl round and can't find any serious rust. As for the tappet noise, I've got a feeling it will adjust out. If it doesn't, then you'll be the first bloke I'll contact for a complete head. I took the photos after I drove it home to Essex from Lincolnshire, I hadn't washed it, it was as bought. It looks better now it's had a bath. Your panels? Course I'm interested. Can I pm you or will you pm me? I'll talk about cars all day long, but please don't get personal like Andyboy did last night. Way out of order. I think I riled him when I called him ' my old son', what he didn't realise it's an affectionate term we cockneys use, or used to.

I have one 3.0cs its the f*ggot auto , i've had it 16 years or so . It has factory a/c and black leather. IT ran and drove well......15 years ago , when it does reappear i'm going to probably fit a motronic 3.5 and a 4 speed auto from a £10 e23!. I'm  not bothered about originality being compromised as coupes are criminally undervalued anyway. It has only had front floors ,n/s front wing, sills and a new bootlid (at my expense ) so by e9 standards it was relatively rustfree !. In my opinion one of the prettiest cars ever, shame they all disolved !.

The 525e Lux is getting scrapped - it needs both
ashtrays emptying and I can't be bothered. Oh, and
rear axle bushes, rear inner sill, two outer
headlamps, 'flickering' instrument needles plus the
other typical old E28 crap etc etc etc. Sorry, but I'm
not putting hours of work into it just to get messed
around by idiots. For £66 it was a cheap 2.7 engine
and I'll not find another as nice as this for so little
(this week).

The cylinder head is off already, good camshaft and
a very fine looking head casting, please read forum rules on selling. I can
guarantee you the noise won't adjust out. Etas were
****** for doing cam lobes.

You've got until Thursday, then it's going in the boot
of the shell up to the 'yard! I'm taking off the
three spoke steering wheel but nothing else as I
don't have room. None of the panels are that great to
be honest. Mond you, it has a superb switchable
auto box. Be a shame to bin that.

Well, it was quite dark when I got it!
