Sorry, but I need to RANT........

I bought my car 2 months ago, not from a BMW dealer, but a 'good' used dealer.  Within a few days, whilst starting to explore the limits of the car, as you do Wink, i was getting a judder through the stearing wheel under heavy breaking.  I also noticed a metal-against-metal rubbing noise coming from the front offside wheel, which got quicker as the speed increased.  This would happen when going straight, turning left, but not when turning right confused_I.

The car was going back in to have some paint touched up (rust bubbles on the drivers door seal and wing mirror, which was surprising on a 2001 BMW), and I asked them to look at the brakes/offside wheel.  The car returned (paint perfect Thumbs Up), but they had forgotten to check the rest.  A couple of days later I was able to take the car up there, and I got the impression that they thought I was making it up! (I may have voices in my head, but noises, no!) Anyway, they conceeded that was indeed a problem, and they thought it was a warped disc. (My conclusion also, but i'm not a mechanic so didn't want to second guess them)  They suggested they would skim the discs, as they sell a lot of TVRs and this often resolves the same problem.  The car was booked in for the work.  Although I was a little dubious.....  I got the car back, without it being fixed as I have grooved/x-drilled discs and they can't be skimmed!

SO.... it was booked in again and they ordered new discs, much to their dis-pleasure! It was thought, as the car has full Schnitzer body kit, wheels, suspension, etc., that the discs were Schnitzer as well.

So..... the car went in again, and I was phoned to say that they now thought it wasn't the discs, but the pads, and could they keep the car as they had odered the pads, but they wouldn't arrive until the next day.  The next day...... they fitted the new pads, but this hadn't resolved the problem, but they had sent the discs back already so they would need the car back AGAIN! Angry

So...... the car went in again.  This was last Friday, but they had the discs on site, it would be a 2 hour job.  This was good as I was going on the "Kielder Run" on the Sunday. So.... I get a phone call, the discs don't fit.  They have been on the phone to BMW, and it turns out that I do not have Schnitzer discs, but a full BMW brake upgrade. The discs are not keep by dealers (Fawdington), and would have to be ordered, can they keep the car 'till Monday. NO! I say (thinking of the drive on Sunday). They phone me back.  They have "paid extra" (!) to have them delivered on Saturday so the car will be ready by lunchtime.

So..... 11:30 Saturday morning.  The discs haven't turned up.  Can't put the old discs back on, can't have the car back until Mondaymad1!!!!  To rub salt into a very poor wound.... they lent me, on Friday, (to go to the office and back) a dirty,R-reg Vauxhall Monterey, which they use to tow the trailer.  Not good for a balst in the country following Coasting in his M3.  "kileder" was cancelled for me mad1 mad1

Monday..... Yes, you've guessed it, the discs HAVE NOT ARRRIVED. And won't, until Wednesday **** **** **** They did swap the Monterey for an A4, but, I mean, really?!?!?!?

So...... It's Wednesday tomorrow. We'll see what happens.....

Thank you for reading. Sorry to rant on, but had to. HAD TO!!!!

No problem with having a rant, but please follow our forum guidelines

Noted. Thanks.

Unlucky mate! Not sure the dealers are entirely to blame here though, sounds like their parts suppliers aren't much use either. I hope this doesn't tip you over the edge, but I'm not convinced the noises you describe will be caused by the discs. Sounds more like a worn wishbone bush to me, but hopefully you will find out tomorrow (and for your sake that I'm wrong!). All the best with the car, dealers, parts suppliers etc etc.

Next time, take it to Priory and I'll give you a contact name - much better and they'll look after you much much more.

You won't get a Monterey that's for sure!

Hey, guess what...... the discs have not turned up!!!!!!!!  There is some debate over what "3 working days" actually means.  Will the delivery will be on the 3rd working day, or the 4th?  And is the day of ordering, the 1st working day, depending on the time of the order, and depending on what the suppliers/couriers cut off time is.  Well, whatever anyones view is.....they will be here tomorrow.... hmmmm, we'll see........

Although, I am no longer annoyed now, but I am beginning to find the whole thing quite funny.......Big Smile

Sorry to hear your tale of woe. I'm susipicious of the diagnosis, too. Noises from the brakes usually change with braking, not with steering input. Worn bushes, loose wheel bearing could allow the brake dust shield and the disk come into contact, though.

The problem with dealing with a non-specialist in your marque, is that they just don't see enough of the same vehicle to know what is what. I don't think a BMW specialist would mistake BMW parts for Schnitzer. Getting non-standard parts is a challenge for anyone, though, and although you are understandable frustrated, the dealer has had problems, too.

Hope it all works out in the end.

By your description, I assume it's the place in Hexham that sells lots of TVRs rather than the one in Bedlington.

Cheers, Neil

Thanks coasting.  The only reason I went back to this garage is because I had only just bought the car from them, so it should be them to make it right.  But I will take you up on your contact when I need it. Cheers.

"Day 7 in the big brother house......and Tim still has not got his car back"

Discs have still not turned up.  The story now...... is that they are NOT BMW upgraded discs, but an aftermarket upgrade. So, they have ordered discs from Revolution in Gateshead.  I have spoken to them myself, and a set of Black Diamond discs were ordered last Friday (the 13th!). Black Diamond have finished making them (??) today, and they will not be with Revolution until Monday! Angry

A friend of mine bought a 323i coupe from them and was very happy with the service.

I thought the black diamond disks were standard size, so OEM disk should fit anyway...

"Day 8 in the big brother house.....and Tim has still not got his car back!"

The discs will not be arriving until Monday.  So that's another weekend without the car.  Not too big an issue this weekend, so not the end of the world.

Thanks for the various bits of advice above.  I have spoken to the garage and they will be investigating the source of the noise, although with no discs/wheels on the car, a little difficult to road test!

Apart from it always being me doing the phoning, the guys at Beddlington have been pretty good.  They are trying to get it sorted, and obviuosly, if it just had standard discs, it would have done & dusted weeks ago.

However, when I do get the car back, I would like to get it checked over, and establish exactly what is on there, brakes/suspnsion/etc. So that I know for future reference.

Does anyone know of a decent mechanic/garage/BMW specialist who would know what they are dealing with, and would give honest, impartial advice?  Ideally in the Newcastle/Durham area.

Tim I've always found Denton Park Service Station very good, the mechanics are great lads. Worth going and having a chat with them, sound them out see what you think. The garage owners a useless but then again its not them that fix the cars !

I knew some lads a couple of years ago that were Escort Cosworth boys and they wouldn't go anywhere else.  I had a Calebra Turbo 4x4 and I thought my clutch was on it's way so I took it too them, and they said there was nothing wrong.  Even though it was making a lot of noise. Two  days later, in Gosforth high street, there was a lot of noise, a lot of smoke, and my gearstick became a useless device.  So I was kind of put off after that!

Got to admit I've never had any problems with them.Did a good job sorting my Honda out after some other garage had broken it.They have a couple of newish mechanics in now too so you might find things a bit different.

BTW I noticed you nearish Durham so if anyone recommends Turbo PACS please shoot them.

Yup

Pull tricks like sticking in screws to block off fuel return pipes then tell you they've increased the fuelling pressure.
Cocked up my Unichip installation on my Honda Vti.Wanted it fitted because they told me that the unit could lower the change over point of the cam.Not only did they not do this they incorrectly installed it,altered settings which they shouldn't have (which blew 2 ignition amps and coils.Second time I took it to R&P who sorted the car and fitted a Unichip to the 306GTi,for free, which I had bought. They recovered their cost from DASTEK.)Plus the Honda came out slower than it went in.Apparently they reverted it back to standard power but altered part throttle settings which made it 'feel' perkier but blew the amps and coils.Mine wasn't the first car that R&P have had to sort either that had been to PACS
Rant Over

R&P have chipped 5 of my cars and I've never had 1 go wrong in any way shape or form. They know how to use their rollers and you get a before and after plot of the BHP,unlike the Cowboys who did the Honda (an ex butcher and window salesman from what I've heard).AA,Trading Standards amongst others have been in.

If you want your car chipped,The Bear,R&P do Superchips and the Unichip piggyback ECU.The only other place I've heard highly recommened for that is in York.Alwyn Kershaw if memory serves.

There probably others more local that the other lads and lasses on here will recommend

Cheers Mickey, just goes to show you.  I went in once just asking in general about the Superchips and they seemed so plausible. The guy on the desk was very slick, probably the window salesman...theres nothing like personal recommendation from people who have had good work done

I can remember an R5 jaunt in a mag years ago, lots of tuners going up to Scotland, their R5 broke down and was the only car to do so.

Was the bloke wearing glassed? Believe it or not they both do the mechanical stuff.Just he was wanting to port my the head on my Honda.Took them a week to find out the blew my car up so I thought better of it.Plus Springfeild wouldn't supply them the parts I needed, had to go get them myself.

Sorry for pinching your thread E46ACS
