window adjustment

I remember seeing an article by someone on adjusting the windows so that they would close INSIDE the seals...anyone else remember that, and know where to find the detail...there are soo many screws  its scary...

After much experimentation I have admitted defeat on this one.

If they are set so that the door closes easily then at speed (~120mph on the autobahn of course...) they pop out sideways with a loud 'fumph' sound.

If they are set so that they engage with the door rubbers enough so that they won't pop out as described, then the door won't close properly.

From the outside I have to push on the glass when I close the door and then it's OK.

From the inside, the windows need to be dropped before the door can be closed without the glass remaining resolutely outside the rubbers. I may make a gadget that does this automatically at some point- the Peugeot coupe (and later frameless door BMWs?) have this feature as standard.

Very small adjustments to the stop make a big difference to the glass height. As the stop wears the glass comes higher and higher, and the risk of breaking the glass when closing the door increases.

Nearly every 6er door I have ever looked in has had bits of broken glass in the bottom, from where the window has broken in the past.

I see a lot of other 6er owners who don't have this sort of problem, but then a lot of them might never drive fast enough to find out their windows might not be secure at speed. I think its rare that the doors close OK and the windows are perfectly secure. 

If anyone else has a good suggestion on this I'd be interested too.

I think my windows are a lot behind the standard of yours Brucey...they are screaming at 40mph...I notice on the passenger door that there is enough 'play' on the glass to allow me to pus the glass inside the rubber seals...but it also hist against the black plastic B-pillar at the top...I suppose the window needs a forwards tilt and then a series of fine adjustments...

the driver dooe just is an enigma...the seals are okay...it looks straight but when the window is would up fully, the motor or mechanism is ever so slightly forcing the interior panel of the door INWARDS...very dodge...but I cant seam to find the root of the problem...

but i am enjoying this really...

one of the faults in the opeing of my driver window was that someone replaced one og the dorr-hinge screws with a longer one...and it was blocking the glass 3/4s of the way down...

I nearly got the 2 windows to stop whistling...its 60mph before they act up now...but I reckong the I will not make any more progress with these door seals as they are...I dont know but they dont look like the 'best-thought-out' idea that BMW ever put on a car...at speed it is reasonable to expect the seals to be compressed and this is enough to allow the air to get at the top of a closed window and then whistle...I could adjust till the cows come home, but the seals will still be too shallow...especially near the side mirror holder...

has anyone purchased new window seals and stopped the whistling?
