don't overlook the differing gas speeds caused by the two metals. as you may already know as stainless runs hotter hence the gases move faster... maybe having SS after MS will create a slight 'vacuum' effect in the manifold operation and it may well balance the manifold temperature as the gases cool when they get further from the combustion chambers.

Mike's looks pretty bad, mine was only cracked. I think a properly repaired manifold should last a long time making the repair very cost effective.

Its is nearly 100% but there is mild steel in the sandwich plates at each end.Thats where its cracked/broken off in the picture that was posted.

intresting remarks made by you both ...thanks for the answers ..there is one thing if i had hold of either in the pic i could tell .what part was S/S  or M/S ..it hard to tell by the pics old and new

m/s   in the sandwitch plate could errode the s/s  in time and hence the fatiugue compounded with the heat would almost cause this common problem ..

but looking at the new pic  ...the welds on them are two diffrent shades   ..meaning one was done with a stainless welding system ..and the other with a mild steel system ..and i doubt that the metal is a composite of mild and stainless .. if that was the case it would be a "dismilar" steel or a mixture of both at there joining points .....so one would contract and expand at diffrent rates   ...did bmw have a crazy day or was there method in there madness?? it has to be one or the other .cos it beats me why 2 contrasting steels should be met at such a heat sensitve point ....

just out of intrest  [and to stop boring myself here. ]

how much is a new one ?????

they would have to be drilled out ....but as by the lookof mikes pic of his new one  ..you will have 6 or 8 mm  of sheared bolt that would pretrude out because the header flange looks like its 6 or 8 mm .thick.so you could something to grab hold off ..rather than the drill method

The manifold is a mixture of stainless and mild steel and most people reckon thats why they are prone to cracking.
