Right guys I'm looking at buying a 5series for LPG ing - Drive an m6 for
long enough and you will soon lock her away for Sundays and look for a
second car!

I started off wanting an e39 540i however - drove one the other day and
there is NO LSD just aload of traction control crap. I have BMW's cause of
lovely oversteer factor - I may as well have front wheel drive car....than
this T.C. crap!

So guys what was the last 5 series with a decent displacement to be fitted
with an LSD (obviously the m5 e39) But what else?

There has been a debate about this on here before.  I think the jury's verdict on that one was, the E39 do not have LSD fitted cos they have the traction control fitted.

If you wan't the oversteer factor - switch off the traction control.

I leave mine on all the time and even with my little 170 bhp E39 I can get her ar$e to swing right out ala Dukes of Hazzard style!  So gawd knows what it'd be like if I switched the traction off.

I think I have got the hang of how to get the tail out with the TC on so I'd better watch if I ever drive it with the TC off!

My 204bhp Senator had a LSD and I could get her sideways with plenty of right foot or light up the big fat rear tyres if I wanted to.  Especially when turning right out of giveways, the inner tyre would smoke, car would stabilize as I got her straight then both tyres would spin again while in 2nd as I floored it on the straight.  No poncy traction control in that barge!

The only E34's to be fitted with a LSD as standard were the 525 Sport, 535 Sport and the M5....

I had the e34 535i sport, good fun with the lsd although you had to try pretty hard to get the back out. Currently I have the e39 540i and the difference in performance is chalk and cheese! It has DSC and yes it does stop any wild antics, although the feeling of security it gives on fast wet corners is second to none. On very greasy and tight corners in car parks it is amazing feeling it brake the inside wheels to get you to turn when all sense is telling you there is not enough grip to turn.

You can turn the DSC off and light up the rear tyres whenever you want of course. However there is another option that is not so obvious, if you hold the DSC switch in for 10-12 secs then the DSC goes into a "sports" mode where it lets you have more fun but will come in to rescue you if things get really out of hand. This is how I drive it all the time now.

BTW my 540i is for sale (Surrey), contact me if you would like details.

This seems to say that the 540i did have an LSD (both auto and manual models) http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE62&mospi d=47384&btnr=33_0085&hg=33&fg=15
