just wondered at what speed you lot drive at on the motorway .i know it can vary a great deal depending on the time of the day /if you know were theres a gatso etc etc..but in genral at what speed do you feel comfortably with??? i stick to the 80 to 90 option as i carnt risk it anymore because i have a few points and i would put myself out of a job if i were to get banned |

with the changeover to kmph over here the new speed limit on motorways is 120kmph which is about 75. Usually I will do about 80 or so.

I normally do an indicated 70-80mph, although this has more to do with fuel consumption. If I go to 80-90mph it makes a big difference to my mpg. They were talking about speeding on the M4 on sky news this morning. Apparently if you are causght doing 9mp over the speed limit you will get a 60 fine and 3 points. Still that's not too bad since 79mph is likely to be closer to 85-90mph indicated on your speedo. |

Both of us being disabled and speed enforcement increasing most of the time it's just not worth it. Not often we're in a hurry so I have the occasional burn for practise. I do like speed but there's a time and place for it ( preferably when there's no gatso's about, lol) I find good driving and reading the road often gets me further than straight speed, which is I think part of what Nigel's IAM is about |

Usually do about 80, though tends to wander up a bit now and again. Generally I go with the flow of the traffic, until my other half points out that she thinks I'm going a bit too fast - oops, better drop down to 85/90
With modern cars, I think its quite safe to do up to 100 (as long as road conditions and driving ability allow). I have had my car upto and over the ton, but only in the early hours of the morning on a completely empty 3 lane motorway - and only for a short distance due to not knowing where gatsos are lurking. The other main factor however is the other road users who might not have the ability/common sense to drive at these speeds, and so impede your own safe progress. Hmm, thoughts of introducing a BMW lane? |

Hi all i stick between 80 and 90 on the motorway as this seems to be the speed most people do and so i feel i am keeping the flow of traffic going! However you always get the odd fool usually in a company mundaneo wanting to tailgate you so you pullover and let him pass. |

I generally follow the line of the traffic but do follow lane discipline and 'encourage' others to follow suit as it makes for a better journey. The best motorway driving is to latch onto a car that you can keep up with, then just follow a couple or three car lengths behind, letting them guide you through the lanes/traffic. Sadly too often these days people just want to sit on your bumper until you move out of the way cos they want to pass, whatever your car and whatever their car!! Sometimes a quick dab on the brakes is all it needs, but not in the M3, only in the company car.....

With cc I stick at 70 as my old girl is doing 2k rpm then and is about as good mpg as she will produce. In heavier traffic I tend to do 80 just to avoid bunching.

For optimum fuel efficiency I set the cruise at 40mph
Cars were never designed for speed but for fuel efficiency ! |

Lock-up kicks in at 56mph. 56 mph on a motorway is dangerously slow. 70 is the legal limit and I have a clean license.
The old girl (735 e23) actually transforms into a high speed cruiser when she lifts her skirts and you can tell that these old barges were designed with Autobahns in mind! |

Is your poll anything to do with this Mr Pma? http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,12389-1565657,00 .html Sounds like they are more of a permanent fixture as of tomorrow, rather than just a few times a month. Edited by Praktisk |

Doesn't matter now cos I don't drive anymore...medical reasons, before anyone kicks up lol.....I used to 'stretch the legs of my cars' on motorways, usually in the early hours when they are nice and quiet. Although on one occasion I did find a washing machine in the lane I was doing a little over the limit in at 2am on the M5 southbound but road was empty so I overtook it. Nothing wrong with it as long as you are prepared to take the responsibility of your actions, pay the cost if you get it wrong and are sensible..ie not brahms etc. Afterall, when you got a 3 litre tubby under the hood, never hurts to blow the cobwebs out every now and then, does it?

lol iam afraid not ..but ive just read that ..and iam fuming..a saftey parntnership doesnt know when to stop do they???? lets face it ..most drivers are going to be too bisy looking at the speedo .and not on the road .there will be no reduction in deaths at all on that road..if it is an acident black spot then it will be allready heavly policed anyway ....and too many drivers will be scared so they will be "clock watching " to the extent of not paying attention to the road.i go through a section of the m621 [a lot]that goes in to a 50 zone..the police love that bit as it goes from a 70 to a 50 ..how come accidents went up[8%] when the introduced the 50 zone last year..??? |

I like around 85-90mph in mine its doing about 2800rpm , not sure if it was more before I had it chipped I think it was 3000rpm , so I just set the cruise at 85 & if I have to pass i just skirt around them & let the cruise take over. If I go 80 then i get better Mpg but as I'm on gas it dose'nt really matter too much. |

These days I try to keep below a GPS 79, so keeping myself in the 10% + 2 rule, this is about an indicated 83 - 85. I have been known to "have a go" if its quiet and I think I can get away with it, but hey...if they are nicking ambulance drivers, we havent got much chance |

As for the article in the times, there have been camera's on motorways for ages, the other end of the M4 is a favourite, the taffia being quite ruthless, the M74 in Scotland is another, along with the M1 in northamptonshire, and the M40 in Thames Valley. All these areas used fixed and mobile with a 10% + 2. Obviously some cretin from another scamera partnership just wants his name in the papers for his 15 mins of fame. |
