you E60 boys, here is your car's ancestor
Note - the interior temp guage reads 85 deg - roll on summer you can't have EH with a 528i - I put the EH switch panel on just to annoy the purists - hee hee |

Why slag it off, thats a nice looking motor - I started with a very early 2500 in line six, twin carb etc etc, wish I still had it. I have an E39 now, I have driven 2 E60's (Diesel and Petrol) and they just didn't feel like home, I guess the E39 is just a hard act to follow. The 2500 was easy to follow, always steaming up, used more fuel than a supertanker, the gearbox sounded like a straight cut le mans box, the seats were like concrete and it understeered like a supertanker too - but that engine man did it sound good when nailed .... I still wish I had kept it ... BMW's have a heritage ... I wonder how many old BMW's are actually getting preserved in original condition, If I had the space and money my first would be a 635 CSi followed by the humble 2002 then try to find a 2500 for nostalgia reasons. More people need to keep the M3's and 5's in original nick too instead of messing them about. One day I'll be able to afford an M5 - but I'm not sure I'll part with my 528 E39 (which handles better than the 540's etc in my opinion). |

I drive a e39 and have also had an e34 and i believe that without these original cars then the 5 series wouldn't be the fantastic car it is today,if you look closely they haven't changed a great deal anyway, with exception to the new generation e60 which will be a grower for me anyway!! I shall be sticking to my e39 for a while yet but i still appreciate seeing these old five's being looked after as with all the old model's. Nice to see another "classic"

There's no beating the old sharks nose my friend - beats the crud out of looking like a mundano ..... Love the 'aggressive' sharks nose of the early bimmers ..... Pity they are starting to look just like any other mass production saloon (i.e the E60), BM's always stood out, there would be no mistaking yours by sight or sound .... |

you mean the 6 cyl exhaust burble? that reminds me of the time when I went to visit Sly who was running an E28 M535i at the time. His garage was some way from his house. I parked behind his car and walked to his house. When he opened the door he said "I heard you arrive, cos only BMWs make that sound". Funny, 'cos I thought I was being really quiet, not gunning the motor or anything. |

That's a lovely E28, good to see another one being well looked after. I
definitely have a soft spot for these old shark nosed cars! Why don't
BMW style them like this any more? They would sell loads. I still
remember the first time I heard the six run properly, smooth as silk
with a growly snarl when the throttle was jabbed (followed by stalling
but that's another story). The noise is something else, I love standing
behind the car when it is idling to hear it purring away. As for the
switchable auto, well I was wondering....
Something I have noticed on various E28's is the position of the radio aerial, were these just fitted to the rear wing where ever the factory liked? Mine sits at least a couple of inches closer to the rear window, and I have seen cars where it is fitted on the passenger side - what's going on there? |

Nice E28 there! E34 rims are a nice, subtle upgrade. They are also very lightweight and high quality wheels, far better than most of the aftermarket blingtastic rubbish you see. I've seen radio aerials all over the place. On the offside, it has to be either well forwards or well back or else it fouls the filler spout and locking mechanism. On the nearside I think it has to be well forwards to clear the jack etc. I think many of them were fitted at the dealers because of the amazing cost of the optional BMW OE radio. Someone once told me that the very last E28 528s had the switchable auto box on them, but I've never seen one with my own eyes. The 2.8 is in many people's view the sweetest and smoothest version of the M30 engine. I absolutely agree about the styling, like a lot of people I have a soft spot for the sharknose- I have an E24 635CSi, (also a 628 project car). The '82 on E24s share most things mechanically with the E28 cars, so they are closely related. cheers

No, you can't have EH on 528i cos only the motronic cars can accept the EH box & its ECU, that means 525e & 535i can come with EH. correct me if I'm wrong guys! the EH ECU connects to the motronic ECU, can't have one without the other. thanks for the nice comments guys - much appreciated. radio aerials are all over the place as fitted by various car stereo shops over the years. Is there one official spot where factory fitted aerials go? they can't style BMWs like this anymore 'cos of the dreadful fuel consumption. aerodynamics of a flying brick. |

Well as can be seen in the picture below mine is fitted well forward
towards the rear window. So these were generally done by the dealer
supplying the car? I think mine is fitted with the original Blaupunkt
radio/cassette which has utterly crap reception when the engine is
running, so that may need swapped for something with a little better
performance. I need my radio 2.

AG - wise words, fear not the Black Beast is staying in its lair for a while yet. I never stopped loving it, just got back my old E23 enthusiasm from somewhere. I wanted a 3.5 BMW but E24 & E28 are pricey & sought after so I went back to the dear old Aunt Sally of the BM range, the E23. Doive - your car is a real honey. whats that colour called? I just love it. |

thanks Paul, but very stock & plain compare with yours. where do you get all the bits & the inspiration for modifying your motor? my car, the Black Beast, originally came with boring & worn grey int. now has blue int. from 3 different E28's. wish I had taken the blue carpets from the two blue interior E28's I broke. |

Cheers for that! Makes all the work and expense worth it when someone else likes her too. The colour is luxorbeige metallic according to the sticker on the wing, I'm not sure what this translates to in english - metallic gold? Up close and in bad light it tends to look silver, but when the sun hits it just right the gold shines through. It's like one of those flip effect paints chavs pay hundreds of pounds per litre for! Don't sell your E28! Later cars just don't have the same charm (for me anyway) and the chances of finding an immaculate E28 are fairly slim anyway. In fact I'd say the one you have is probably as good as you are realistically going to do without spending thousands on a concours job, so just do whatever needs doing and then look after her! That's what I plan to do with mine. Once I give her a good polish and wash the pale velour interior I reckon she won't be far off showroom condition. |
