how did you first become aware of the problem?did the handling go to pot?this seems to be a major design fault on bmw's behalf with the earlier e46 323ci and 328ci.does it affect the saloon aswell?
E36 323i coupe,E30 325sport.

Sweet jesus that's brutal. Are BMW covering it out of goodwill or do you have separate warranty cover?

BMW are covering it as a goodwill gesture.

@Techno...the rear end started creaking under acceleration and she wasn't planted on the road in bends...started getting a bit loose at the rear.

Holy siht, thats serious, not so bad seeing as BMW are gonna cover it. Makes you wonder about the build quality though.

Richie - has this upset your ownership of the car, will you trade it after or will you be happy enough once the work is done.......maybe a Z4 on the horizon

I second that. Just as well it's being covered, otherwise with 40 hours labour it could be classed as a right off (at main stealer rates). Richie - DO you have statistics regarding number of cars affected by this design fault.

Apparently the car will be stronger whenever when it gets repaired so I'm not too worried. I've some nice mods planned to cheer myself up when she comes home.

I've no stats but I know there's not too many in this country.USA and UK seem to have tonnes.

I guess it being one of the first run of E46 coupes it was a learning car. They reinforced the subframe in 2000.

And anyone know where I could lay my hands on these?

Are you talking about the stick on metal discs or the whole plastic cap? I got a set of the discs in Joe Duffy's a while back. Cost less than a fiver each and are much better quality than ones you'd find on ebay etc....
No BMWs in the family (for the moment) Other stuff includes Mk2 Golf GTI 8V and G60, Vento VR6 track car and a few other bits and pieces

I didn't want to give you a cardiac arrest but as Richie said not all cars are affected by this problem must be only Monday and Friday build cars. If it hasn't happened by now Robbie I doubt it will happen to you so keep polishing for the Easter weekend
