Guys;

to what extent can a rusting driver-side sill be repaired...the rust look fairly well developed; what are the options for welding/replacing a sill/cost therein...is this generally a problem which would make a 6 'untouchable' ?

OE body panels are available from BMW, at a price....

More practically I would imagine that pattern E28 sill repair panels are available; these should fit with a little modification.

Very few 6ers will have survived unscathed from the rust bug by now. Obviously badly executed repairs will lower the value of a car, but I would not dismiss a 6er simply because it had some repair work, provided it was well done, and suitably rustproofed afterwards.

Costs vary depending on what parts you use, and who you have doing the work.

Genuine parts + garage labour = big money.

On the other hand I have known people patch up wrecks with pieces cut out of old washing machines and drive them round quite happily for years.

The choice is yours....

cheers

Trev is becoming a good friend who has fallen in love with the idea of the E24 Six. I have been helping him to assess suitable candidates for him to acquire.....

...and he hails from my favourite part of the world.

You can buy the middle section (ie the bit that
stretches from the rear of the front wing to behind the
B-pillar) from BMW - it's about 300. I haven't found
anyone else that does them, and I really looked.
My sills had gone behind the B-pillar - not part of the
removeable section. One BMW specialist looked at
them and quoted 3000 for a repair. I had it done by
a 'normal' garage, and it cost around 300. Not a
perfect repair - you can see where it's been plated
but it's neat and solid. And it means the car lives!
Whether it's untouchable depends on if you can find
a competent welder who won't bodge it or charge
you loads. Unlikely, however, that it's unrepairable.
Cheers

But can one patch the sills to get them past an MOT and so on...the sills arent the most vital piece of support under the car..are they?

That's why my sills were repaired - to get the car
through an MoT. Sills are very important, but anything
can be repaired- it's just a case of finding someone
to do it at a reasonable price.

The sills are one of the most important parts of the car.

With chronically rusty sills you effectively have a hinge in the middle of the car.

Weld repairs done well do not compromise the integrity of the monocoque. Weld repairs done badly (or no weld repairs) can cause your car to fold up like a pile of compressed fag packet liners.

cheers

Coming from a Ford background this rust thing isn't a problem, just a normal fact of life.

Don't worry about the quality of repairs on structural members such as sills - just leave the doors closed and make sure the the car keeps moving....

TREV.....i am in dublin and have just bought a pile of rust,i was told it was a 635 and im taking his word on it.anyway, i was just wondering if you found someone to weld your car and was it expensive?MY car is gone on the inner front arches.em..let me rephrase that me front inner arches are gone literally and both sills are gone.only bought the car 2weeks ago on ebay(guy was very liberal with his description).got the car home only to discover it was rotten.half of me wants to sell it and recover some of my money other half wants to keep it.lack of money, knowledge and resources has me worried though.

if you could give me an idea of what you got done and how much it cost it might help me decide.

thanx john

John,

why not buy a welding set and learn the art of fixing it if you can't find anyone who will do the work. At least that way you will have done a job that you are happy with.

just a thought

cheers

im thinking of getting a welding set,im looking for a garage to store the car in first.if i can find a garage to rent then i think i will definately have a go at doing it up.i wouldnt be able to get it concours but id be happy enough to get it roadworthy.its very annoying buying a car and watching it sit there.if my friends were fast runners id go to the extreme of sitting in the car and have them pushing me in and out of work each day.

...and it's not showing up because you're trying to post it direct from your PC instead of uploading it to a photo-hosting site first.....
