Well, it's got a whopping 82,000 miles on the clock, which would seem to be genuine as I have every MOT certificate since the first one.
I quite like the idea of using that stuff - I've looked at it in the past, and it seems to get some very good reviews, and they have plenty of real test results on their website. Only reason I've never used it in the past was it seemed a PITA to apply (presumably having to disconnect AFM to apply it). Anyone else tried it and care to let me know how difficult it is to apply?

This isn't the problem with a smokey engine on start up though. You can replace the valve seals without removing the head but you need to pressurise the cylinders at Top Dead Centre with compressed air. Then use a special tool to depress the valve springs whilst avoiding them dropping into the cylinder!!!! Otherwise head gasket set is around £200. 8 hours labour via a competent mechanic or a weekend doing it yourself if you feel inclined. If the engine doesn't use oil when running then there is no bore wear which is great news. Worn valve seals then become a minor irritant only on start up. If it helps my rebuilt M635 engine with new valve seals will still smoke very slightly on start up after being laid up for a couple of weeks. Maybe a nicked seal in my case but it doesn't bother me. I have also run Power Boost rpior to rebuild. Removed alot of carbon and made engine run smoother but again this aint the problem at hand. Ian |

PS to run Power Boost you just losen the tubing arounf the air flow meter and squirt away at 2000rpm. It will decoke the engine nicely. Valve stem seals harden with age. 82kmiles? It's just run in. I wouldn't rip the head off to resolve the start up smoke issue. Ian |
