Shoestring7

Hi

Following your comments about Pottsys white 215 I bought it off him about 7 months ago. I have another E30 m3 which is immaculate and have just started track days and I did not wish to wreck it in any way so i was looking for a car for track days etc.

After doing a few bits and pieces this one is also a nice car, so I suppose one has just got to be careful and treat them with respect.

John

You have to see Hiabboy's side - if he spends hours ressurecting M3's back to good condition, it must be frustrating to see a rare evo sport needlessly wrecked, by someone who clearly does not respect the car.

Personally I don't see the point of driving a rare car like this to the limit - there are better cars for this with less 'passion' about them that don't particularly matter if they get written off. As for the XK150 story, that's just sad beyond belief.

If the owner is a 'talented' driver and respects the car it should not have been crashed. Sure use it, but keep a little in reserve, its not a race after all?

What's the difference between 'idiot' 'Nova' drivers wrecking their cars and someone who should know better wrecking an evo sport? Ans. The idiot Nova driver did the world a favour by reducing Nova count. Evo sports don't exist today to be written off, its reducing my chance of having one one day, so sorry no sympathy from me.

1. It has nothing to do with anyone how he uses his M3 , least of all Hiabboy.

2. It's an M3 ... a driving machine honed on a track.Buy a 318 if you like to push it out of a garage and clean it of a weekend.

3.No car that was built as a racing car first should not be used on a track. If Nick Mason can race a 250 GTo worth 5 mill, then a Sport Evo can get out there too . I don't have a problem if the owner doesnt wish to track his car or never drive it in the wet , or even drive it hard . My personal opinion on that would be he has wasted his money of buying a driving machine.

4.The car has an ///M badge on the back of it . M is for motorsport. The whole idea of homologating the Sport Evo special parts is for it to work on the track . This is a raod legal race car.Use it as such if you want.

5. I've never met the owner, and so I suspect have you , I also don't know what the cause of the accident is , again probably like you . I do know accidents happen and even the best drivers in the world get caught out at times. Saying "If the owner is a 'talented' driver and respects the car it should not have been crashed " is just pointless when both of us don't know what happend. And even if you did , it would still go against what I said at the start of this part.

No offence meant to anyone .All of the above is just opinion.

Why?

For all the reasons in my last post.

So what do you think about classic car racing then? FFS, Sport Evos cost £10,000-£20,000. There are men racing cars costing over a million quid. Should they stop? No way.

Watch your comments. Pottsy is a member of this forum, and having met him at track days, I like the chap. Be careful who you are slagging off on this forum. Do not get personal.

Lastly, Pottsy does "respect" the Sport Evo and yes, he is "talented" behind the wheel.

I agree 100%

What's a rare car? What does it mean?
It's means what you want it to mean I suppose.
Remember the 90's when 308's were selling for
£80k ! What would you want every sport evo owner
to do? keep it in a dehumidified garage and only
drive it when it's sunny !! just to please YOUR value
on a sport evo !

MY car impresses me everytime I drive to the limit,
especially when i run out of talent and that's what I
enjoy - learning to drive these cars.

And regarding the XK story, he enjoys it, racing in the
XK challenge mixing it up with 20 other guys in 50k
cars flat out at all the race tracks in the country....

you only live once, and you can't take the car with you!

All in IMHO. No offence ment. It's been a while since
we had a good debate on here.

Dear oh dear. Don't take your Sport evo's to the track, no respect for the cars, comaprisons with Nova drivers, where will it end.......

Rules for owning an E30 M3 (any model)

1. Take it to the track.
2. Take it to the track.
3. Take it to the track.
4. Service regulalrly and drive it loads
5. Take it to the track.
6. If you have any thoughts that a straight 6 would be a better engine in it, sell immediatley.
7. Take it to the track.

Simple really.......

ps I have seen the car under discussion here, and it's not that bad. It's certainly recoverable. The reason it was written off was beacuse of the silly prices for all the Evo Sport bits, like the front splitter arrangement which is about £1500 from BMW, for basically a load of plastic.....

Imagine all this rare and precious cars would be looked away because of that?
Goodwood Festival of Speed?? Good by!
Classic Car Racing?? Good bye!
History Rallies??? Good Bye!

I do like to go to car museums from time to time, but I much prefer to see them roaring down some race track!

It all depends on the funds you can spend. M3 E46's owners take their cars to track days and that's a lot more dosh to pull through the gravel....
E61 520d, slow and buzzy but my wallet likes the mpg.....

profit to fund the next project, obviously if i was to put a price on my
time the profit would more than likely be a loss, c'est la vie.  Track days
and most other forms of 'sport' by their very nature attract poseurs and
exhibitionists, those who want to show the world just how much money
they've got and how easily they are parted from it. Have you ever noticed
the fastest man on the track is seldom the man with the most expensive/
modded car?.  I haven't made any comments regarding any particular
persons driving ability, Uwe m3 was the person who said Pottsy could
drive circles round me on the track and my reply implied that avoiding
solid immovable objects would probably be a more useful party trick.  My
point is why abuse and risk destroying  a sport evo when a £4000
dogmeister will do the same job. Anyone who pays £12-£15000 for a
decent sport evo surely knows it is not twice the car of a '90 215 car, he
is buying it for its rarity and the fact it is the pinnacle of the e30 m3
model range. To extensively modify/molest such a car is surely a case of
oneupmanship and a blatant disregard for one of BMWs finest hours.

I'll guess you'll have to carefully vet all the potential buyers for all these
restored Sport Evo's of yours to make sure that they spend the rest of
their existence stored in carcoons.

Chances are they'll take it out for a gentle Sunday drive in the summer
and one of those Nova 's will come steaming round the corner and BANG
it gets written off.....

Chris - Let us keep the track driving in perspective about cars being damaged. Thankfully these incidents are very rare and they are not a race, we are in control of what happens. If you are pushing the envelope dont - wait and let it come to you.

If you do have an interest but not sure - why not attend one of the clubs BDD day's as a spectator and see for yourself. When I started attending about 10 years ago that is what I did but it was so enthralling that I had to just get out there. The only pressure to perform comes from within and that you can control.

The whole issue of driving on track is humbling, in isloation we may think we are pretty nifty but then you find your place in amongst others on that day!

In regard to Potsy I recall going around with him in his previous car at Donington a few years ago and he was finding his feet but had commitment, last year I tried to keep with him at Cadwell but as the sessions continued he became stronger and stronger. There was no way I could stay with him without pushing the barriers further than I felt comfortable with and even then.......I doubt it.

That is one of the reasons I will miss him - hopefully not for long? because he became a bench mark against which I could gain some measurement, plus following his car (for the time I could) was a highlight just seeing the car in motion the attitude and angles - brilliant. Then after in the car park, someone's ego was trying to find a reason as to why Potsy was so fast in comparison to their own performance, it was the brakes, the this the that.....when obviously the fact that time and effort to improving his craft had not been a consideration - Classic!

If I was to damage my car I would be very upset but that is not going to stop me from using it to 'my' maximum.

If you are interested then I will get you some rides with some of the guys who have been on track in one form or another for 40 years, we have a couple I can think of who are fast but sitting next to them you would not think so. They seem to drive in slow motion, everything is calm and unflustered and they provide a bench mark to try and reach.

-------------------

All this talk of rareity and values some might think there were only a handful produced there are (were) 600 that is a lot of cars think of all those lined up! (forty GTO's?), I know of a number of very low mileage examples that are pampered, completely standard, one being better than new with enammelled calipers etc etc etc, same owner for 4 years driven it about 500 miles!

Now for him that is joy of ownership, for me I like to experience the driving dynamics as much as possible for others they like rebuilding them so actually each owner expresses their own individuality as it should be - will never be any different.

1. We can all express opinions, its what a forum is for.

2. Its an M3.

3. For me there's a big difference between actually racing, or just doing a track day.

4. So race it. But, low and behold, it would be uncompetitive today because it a piece of history.

5. No I don't know the owner, but just looking at the facts - razzed - crashed - scrapped. It doesn't look very caring on the face of it.

Caring! why should anybody be 'caring' to a car?
It's a not a dog, it's just a lump of metal, it dosn't have
a mind of it's own or feelings - My car is there to
make ME happy, nobody else.

Do you believe we should all change our timing
chains at 99,999 miles ... just to be caring?
If it goes bang, It's a good excuss to build a 2.5.

A good noisy debate is a healthy thing.

Just respect the other opinions, even if they are wrong!!!

Personally I believe they should be driven as they were intended. There will always be one in a museum to look at in 50 years time.

Ok, apologies, caring is a soft word, but if wrecked, being ****d to fix it, or use the parts to build another, not tossing it away at the breakers, that's what I found frustrating. It's like a guy I knew who cut a perfectly restorable Triumph Stag up 'cos he couldn't be ****d to do anything with it, or even give it away to someone who could.

Blowing enignes is fine, great excuse to repair (and indeed improve) bending and mending cars is fine, but scrapping and Evo sport. That's a waste.
