I think there was a 524d too (non turbo). Also available as 324d and td. These models never produced in rh drive.
Parts should be no problem whatsoever. You see loads of these car in mainland Europe. I think BMWGB keep the oil filters for the few that are in the UK. Other mainstream specific parts would be 48/72 hours from back order. I knew a guy with a 524td (e28) auto who said the economy and performence were fantastic. |

I'm tempted to enquire about the m535, but if you say it's a scrapper it's gotta be bad!! I just want an e28 to smoke around in. I'm trying to move away from the e23, lovely old cars, but I can't stand the abuse!! |

Doive i suggest you go and check your oil level straight away , an m20 takes 5 litres. Does this mean its all running ok and the head is alright! ,if so your a lucky man. Don't get carried away and start throwing money at it . Most e28s have to be viewed as disposable transport, once something expensive (i.e £200 +) goes wrong bin it and find another. A nice (are there any left?) 525e is a very pleasant car but alas is nigh on worthless. As for your 'specialist' friend he obviously doesn't sell cars for a living !, its been a while since any e28 (M5 or Alpina excepted) sold for £2500.

Quick very happy update on the 525e - Doive one happy chicken. Turns
out the oil pressure switch is faulty, causing the oil light on the
dash to flicker on. The last owner just kept on chucking oil into it,
of course it had nothing to do with oil pressure! My specialist drained
SEVEN LITRES of oil out of the car - the sump holds three and a half.
He said the oil was everywhere, blocked the breathers and the idle
control valve, and completely coated the spark plugs so causing the
severe misfire. After all his work draining the oil, cleaning the plugs
and sorting out the idle valve she runs as sweet as a nut, and pulls
like a train. Big brutal old school power, not much off the line but
absolutely loads when you put your foot down. And the noise is
fantastic. Best of all, he valued the car at two and a half grand. Not
bad for 150 quid.

I've never seen one - in fact until last week I had no idea that such a car ever existed. Be interesting to have a drive in one, I'd love an older diesel. Almost bought an SD1 2400 TD off eBay a few weeks ago. 90bhp moving a big lump like that, and turbo lag you could use as an egg timer. Glad I didn't though, or else I would never have come across the 525!

are there any 524t's still around? I saw one on eBay last year, looked sound, but was told parts are almost impossible to find over here!

No I agree, torque is essential to a fast car. The 525e spec makes interesting reading - 125bhp but a massive 177lb/ft of torque. This is reflected in the performance figures with 0-60 being a relatively long 12 seconds, but I'd love to see the in gear and kickdown acceleration times! As comparison the 524td had similar torque, now that is impressive for a petrol engine. To be fair the 325 I saw was left hand drive but it was british registered, was just wondering what the link may have been with the 'eta' engine. Keeping my hopes up for a positive verdict this evening from my man in the know. |

The 525e is definately the 'small 6' M20 cam belt engine.
There was a 325e (saw one in Australia) but not for the UK market. So, if the car you saw advertised was in the UK, it could be an import, or someone has fitted the wrong instrumentation. The 520i and 525e have identical bhp's, but the 520 with an auto box was a bit of a 'slug' - the 'eta' was just so powerful by comparison which shows bhp is not the be all and end all. |

Its a confusing one, but from what I understand the smaller E28 sixes
including the 525e had the M20 'little six' engine, whilst the bigger
engined ones from the 525i (I think) upwards had the M30 'big six'
engine. One of the main differences between them is that the M20 had
belt driven cams, while the M30 had chain driven cams. I have a belt
driven cam in mine, so its definitely the M20. I suppose in theory the
head from a 520 should fit the 525e, but there must be subtle
differences - is the bore in the 525e not smaller than the 520i? I know
the stroke is quite a bit longer.

Excuse my ignorance, but is the head being talked about the M20 engine ? I know the later E28's and early E34's like mine shared the M20 engine. |

One thing I forgot to ask. I noticed an E30 325i for sale online, and
it has the rev counter red lined at 4500rpm the same as the 525e. I
thought this limit only applied to the 2.7 long stroke engine, so were
some of the E30's fitted with this engine? I'm just thinking in terms
of worst case scenario, sources of replacement eta heads.

Please don't tempt me to take more pics, I only have 15Mb web space!! I
would completely fill it with pictures of the car if I had the chance.
I'll get some more pics of the car some day when the sun comes out, or
else when I get a chance to polish her all up. I'll take a picture of
my flatmates face when he comes back this evening to see the big beast
parked in our space. I like photography, so over the spring/summer I'll
try and get pics of her in scenic locations across Scotland.

Unfortunately I'm a bit of a stickler for originality, so if possible
I'd like to keep her standard. Of course as a last resort I'd put a
520i head on (nothing to do with that 25hp extra), but will the valve
duration not be completely different so changing the power delivery?
Been told the 2.7 is a lovely lazy torquey old beast, with decent fuel
economy when you are taking it easy. This is all speculation at the
moment, as we haven't had the head off her yet.
I found myself last night at 2am sitting in the freezing cold inside the car, staring around in mild to medium disbelief at what I'd bought. It's addictive. Went out this afternoon, opened the bonnet and stood staring for about ten minutes. It's very sad. Thanks for the encouragement guys, although as you can probably tell from my posts I had no intention of ever letting her go back to the scrapyard! Boing! |

andyboy, will the 320/520 head wreck the famous eta fuel economy?
