Hi

I have a 1999 E36 convertible and at the weekend went to unlock the car with the remote, which failed. My spare remote is not working either. I have replaced the batteries in both remotes and they still dont work. I checked the handbook which tells me the only way to deactivate a 3G EWS alarm is with the secret code supplied with the car. I am not the first owner so dont have the code. I have managed to disconnect the siren and the hazard warning lights so that I can use the car.

I have removed the glove box and tried to recode the remotes from the control unit but I dont think it will let you recode the remotes while it  still thinks it is activated. Does anyone know if this is true.

The BMW dealer has told me that i will need a new control unit and this will cost £150 + fitting

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks

There was an article in Total BMW about re-coding the key fobs, have you seen it?
Also my dealer only charged me £20 to re-code one of my fobs,so where's the £150 come from?
Surely the alarm re-sets after a while?

Thanks Guys

I have seen this article and used it to get access to the control module. The problem is that it wont let you recode the keys because the control module still thinks it is armed and wont let you recode the keys while it is armed.

I think if i could find a way to disarm it i could then use the article to recode the original keys or code a new one.

The dealer said that if i cant deactivate it then i will need a new control module which costs £150.00 & fitting

My car has the same alarm but its played up every since I bought the car. the fob locks and unlocks. but when ot unlocks the siren goes off and it won't turn off. I've now disconnected the siren. The car had been stood still for a while when I bought it (had to boost it) does anyone know if the alarm may need re-setting at all?

I think this is the system that was on Mrs D's 316i (I replaced it because I thought there was a problem with it, it turns out it wasn't the issue, but that's another story).

Anyway, there should be a key that you can use on the siren under the bonnet that disables the system.  Was there anything like that on the keys you got with the car (its a fairly small key)?  If so, then you should be able to do the coding stuff after disabling it with the key.

As another approach, I don't suppose BMW Customer Service can help you?  They may need the chassis number and may be a bit shy about giving this kind of info over the phone.  If they can get a security code for a BMW radio (as they did for me via my dealer) then they should be able to get this for you.

Thanks Mr D

Unfortunately I havent got one of those keys either.

I have spoken to BMW and they say that they havnt got the information and dont ever get it. The system is made in Italy and then supplied to the dealer direct who then fit it and supply the owner with a secret code in a yellow sealed envelope. Therefore BMW dont ever see the secret code.

Hi,

I am in a similar position with my Z3. The battery died and on replacing battery I cannot disarm my alarm. I have the procedure to recode the keyfob but am stuck until I can disarm the alarm

Did you manage to solve the problem of disarming it without the keyfob.

Hi

The only way to disarm it is if you have the secret code supplied when the vehicle was new. It comes in a yellow envelope. I did not have nor did the previous owner

I did manage to resolve the problem but only by paying my local BMW specialist to rip out the 3G alarm and put a completely different system in. He says the system is poor and if he replaced the black box something else would go wrong. The new alarm works perfectly and is better than the old one.
