Not being an expert on UK reg plates but isn't S reg 1998? If so then check for nikasil applicability - was block changed if it is a nikasil block?

Start engine from cold and with drivers door open look for any noticable shaking. If there is walk away. A compression test or leakdown test is a better judge though.

If you get the chassis number from the car and ring BMW UK they will tell you if it was changed.

alusil blocks were re-introduced l8 98 -99 period however quite a high number of 323's and 328's of the period had the blocks changed under warranty

some cars are still running nikasil blocks today and have no problems, as long as they have been run on low sulfur fuels all there life they should be ok,

look for a FBMWSH and if the car is under 100k which it is then BMW will still honour a block change to the best of my knowledge

heres a quick check from the e36coupe forums

http://www.fastandstupid.co.uk/Uploads/alen%20screw2.jpg

look at the above image, which should be present from the passengers side looking down near the middle of the block

if that plate is present then its an alusil block :)

appart from that its the usual checks, oil cap for mayonaise sludge, tyres uneven wear etc :)

Summer Project on its way......

IMHO 7.5K is a bit much for a car without a FBMWSH. S reg should be past the date where nikasil is a problem. Check that the car has been well maintained especially recently. You don't want to buy a car that is long overdue a service and is due replacement of a lot of suspension components brakes etc, like I did!

went to see it as i said " sales sharks " as per normal. Pointed out the rear window seals were perished " that can be added to the price sir !!!!! "  ME :- " Added to the price ?? " SALES BLOKE :- " yes sir , as we don't have our own workshop on site , so we would need to contract it out " Should have walked away then but was intrigued to see what other nonsense he was going to spout . ME :- " and of course the car will be serviced before i get it ? " SALES BLOKE :- " yes , Again sir that to can be added to the price  " ME :- " the front tyres are a bit worn are they not ?" SALES BLOKE :- " They are  road legal sir  but ..... " ME :- " don't tell me , it can be added to the price " At that point had heard enough & told him " thanks for your time but not interested " told him he will never sell the car ( car has been on sale for 2 months !!!! ) Wonder why !!!!

Best way to check is to ring BMW UK.

When I bought mine, I knew about this tag thing, but was still unsure.

Not fancy a trip south to look at mine??

hi Dave  is it a 323 you have for sale or is it that fab looking 328 ? Going to try to keep to a 323 for the insurance e.c.t . don't think insurance folk would take to kindly to all the great mods you have done to it . But would love to take it . Where are you from ?

Yes it is a 328. TBH I can't see a 328 being that much more on insurance. Its an ins. grp 16 as it has Cat 1 alarm/immob. Some insurance companies are good with mods, and my mods aren't noticable, apart from the air filter. The exterior is std. Its at your discretion with insurance!!  Its 606 FC for me.

I'm in Manchester.

Failing that try 'morethan'
