635CSi Electronic shift control indicator

   My indicator light for the "Electronic shift control unit for EH automatic transmission" (page 19 in owners book, 1988 635 CSia) has just decided to stay on. On page 24 it refers to the Electronic-hydraulic transmission and states that if this yellow indicator light stays on after starting the auto box defaults to 3rd gear which is exactly what it is now doing. This fault has just happened and I can think of nothing that has been done to cause it. Box has fluid so has anybody got any suggestions as where to start looking for the problem ?
