Hi (and a Merry Christmas),

Two months ago I bought an E28 528i as a winter runabout (plus I'd always fancied one and it was a good excuse) in this time it has performed well, although I did comment on here at the time that it could do with an LSD and that the clutch pedal sometimes was slow to return to level with the brake pedal.

Now, however the pedal sometimes is in need of a bit of a rest on the carpet when I leave the car and I have to hook it with my toe. The action itself is fine (most of the time)and I have checked to see if it is leaking but nothing conclusive (no major loss in fluid). I have got the Haynes manual (HAHAHAHA) so if anyone has any idea what I should look for as I'm getting under it tomorrow - please let me know.

Many thanks.

It only cost me two hundred quid and it's due an MOT in Feb so I want to minimise expense at this time as I'm sure other bits will need doing!

Thanks again,

Phil

Sounds like a hydraulic problem to me.

If you had the full pressure in the hydraulic system, then the force from the clutch pressure plate would push the clutch pedal back up.

I would check the clutch slave cylinder at the gearbox for leaks.

The seals are prone to failure, but not always easy to see as they leak fluid inside the bell housing.

You could even try bleeding the clutch first, I am pretty sure you will get a bit of air out of the system.

This should improve the pedal, but probably only short term repair.

You will probably need to replace the slave cylinder.

New one from Eoro car parts is probably around £20.

Gordon

If it isn't broken, Don't try to fix it.

Gordon,

Many thanks. Is replacing the slave cylinder a reasonably easy job or a nightmare?

Phil,

The slave cylinder is attached to the gearbox by 2 bolts and I believe it should be a reasonably easy job. The hydraulics will need to be bled and I don't know wether its easy or not. I had to take my slave cylinder out when I did an engine swap last year.

It could also be the master cylinder. In fact this is more likely if you are not losing fluid.

cheers

Thanks,

Strangely enough it's completely behaving itself at the moment so I may just bleed it and keep an eye on it.

Thanks again.

Oh and if I do swap the slave and or master I'll let you know if it's easy or not!

Phil
