Great example of good cop/bad tempered cop....

Doing rail replacement coach work into London in 93. Using a Shearings coach. Trains and tubes were on strike and about 80 coaches had been hired in to get the workers into central London.

The pick up point at the end of the day was Smithfield Market. All the coaches had photocopied permits to park at the market.

Up comes jobsworth City of London copper.

Walks around the coaches mumbling into talking brooch. Next thing we know a couple of dozen wasps arrive, books, tickets and pens at the ready.

We all took exception to this and the wasps started writing tickets and sticking them to the windscreens of all the coaches. We called the co-ordinator who duly arrived about 10 mins later.

All the drivers then took a vote that if the jobsworth and his wasps didn't go away we would all drive nose to tail around central London.

Next thing another copper arrived in Range Rover. Top brass one. He called jobsworth over and promptly gave him a right dressing down infront of everyone.

Both he and his wasps were despatched promptly, we all got apologised to profusely and top brass left.

Jobsworth would have been linched, me thinx had top brass not arrived when he did.

oh yeah, been through the "good cop, bad cop" routine too...

years ago when i was travelling down south on holiday late at night about 12:30, no other traffic about at all... 110 on the A9 dual carriageway.... suddenly lights appeared way behind me right up on a hill... slowed down to 60, not braking, call it a hunch...

eventually the car came up behind me and overtook... nice stripey police car, yep... so nervous i forgot to dip my headlights (whoops), he slowed... 50....40...30.. whats this guys ****ing problem??!? next thing...police stop sign, blue lights...

pulled in behind, oh shoot, main beam still on <click> off

driver gets out.. just as spokey said, really aggressive "could do you for dangerous driving blah blah blah"

other young copper passenger was nice as ninepence, where you going, long journey ahead, nice part of the country yaddayaddayadaa

meanwhile the nasty one was giving it the full eyeball round the car, he took a particular interest in the numberplates, standard old font, 3d honeycomb with little ford logos in the background (when that stuff was legal), and i saw his face drop when he saw the bso kitemark (? - the sign that says theyre road legal)

you could tell he was fizzing... most likely because he didnt manage to get a fix on my speed before i slowed down

they both roared off, and reversed up into a side turning up ahead, waiting for their next "punter"

didnt have long to wait, there was a nissan 300zx giving it beans coming the other way about 5 minutes later, i hope he saw my headlight flashes

For too long the police commissioners have been detached from their officers, hence the huge problem recently exposed over the racial difficulties in certain constabularies. The government just want results and targets and they really don't mind how they are sought. Until those at the top in the police really start getting to grips with their officers then the problem of rogue officers will increase.

Better training and control costs money, government are squeezing the budget, lack of training and control causes problems at ground level...

Catch 22.

I guess there will always be rogue officers, regardless of where you live or travel through. The German and Welsh tourists on my coach were very well treated but it could so easily have been the opposite.

Sadly there are some police who have a chip on their shoulder and aren't afraid to show it. Those should be reported as soon as possible so they can be removed or retrained.

Courtesy and respect costs nothing.

Spokey, it doesn't matter that you didn't catch his name, if you speak with the Inspector he will find out exactly who it was...thats part of his role.

I don't want to keep re-repeating what has been said above, but in every organisation you get the odd idiot . I don't mean to go as far as 'The Secret Policeman' or anything as heavy as that but sadly you get them everywhere. thats life I guess

I would, but I didn't really catch the guy's name. In fact, I didn't really follow a lot of what he said (which did help my calm response :) )

I also don't really know what my reporting will do to help, to be honest, there were two other on-duty policemen who saw him ranting at me, and the other guy in his car was another off-duty copper and they all did nothing to stop the way he was behaving.
Ciao,
Spokey

I cant promise he can help, but if you have the coppers details, please speak to Gary in the scottish forum.

I know at least one other on here who has answered you is a copper, but Gary is a scottish one, and a very decent one.

I served as a special with the west mercia when I left the armed forces, and I have seen this behaviour, its rare...very rare, but there is the odd idiot out there wearing that uniform.

You acted correctly, never ever respond, no matter how tempting it can be, its all very frustrating as if they say you did "A", its almost impossible to prove you didnt, Stephen Perry has had a similar experience, although they actually "did" him.

I feel very sad and angry reading posts like that, as will the decent majority of policemen.

That incident WILL be logged, as has already been pointed out to you, the marked car will have been told via radio to stop you.

Report it, the rest of the population need you to report errant policemen.

Best Wishes

Nigel

I would whole heartdly agree with Evodude - make a complaint. But sound confident in what you tell them. i.e., not that you don't remember overtaking over a blind crest, but that you DID NOT overtake on a blind crest. This sounds like an overzealous officer who has had a bad day. They must know its not acceptable to act like that - a badge does not give them that right.

And to people who say 'Never trust a copper...'etc, have a bit more of an open mind? There are a few bad 'oldskool' coppers that large it up and give a bad reputation to the rest, but the majority are just normal people doing a job. If someone approches me with a big stand-off attitude, then I respond the same - like most people I expect, and then it just spirals downwards from there. Behaviour breeds behaviour and all that. Just my opinion from my experience.

If you feel he was genuinely out of order then do report him. Go into the Police station or phone and speak with the Inspector. You don't know what situation that copper is in...he could be new or a very BAD traffic cop and require bringing down a couple of thousand pegs. The copper who spoke to your passenger would have received a call to pull you over only at the request of the lary one so taking passengers details was probably giving him something to do. If you are unsure about what is hapening about the allegation next then just phone up...if things are like you say then someone needs to tell this copper that there are villans out there too.

I dont have any respect for the police, they see themselves as better than everyone else, and think they can bully people around just 'cos they have a uniform on.

There are a few odd ones that are ok, but on the whole after what I've seen, experienced and from other peoples experiences, I will never trust a copper... ever...

I felt like he was a heartbeat away from decking me on arrival -- I really wasn't going to provoke him.

Perhaps if I was a solicitor or a lawyer...

In retrospect though, I'm sorry I didn't, as I really feel a bit hard done by.

Probably didn't get his 'oats' the night before or at breakfast.

One thing some of the plod do expertly is take a bad day at home to work with them and treat the public like its their fault.
