E36 328i tickover

   Hi

My 328i SE (1996) is idling at around 400 rpm and I would suggest that this is a little low. I tried cleaning the Idle Control Valve (not an easy task with big rugby playing hands!!!!!!) and this worked for all of a 5 mile trip!!!

Would this problem be the ICV or could other things be contributing to the problem??

	Have a look for leaks or splits on the pipes, could be leaning the mixture out on idle. If you're cleaning the idle control valve best bet is just to spray loads of carb cleaner in the end, no need to pick about at it.

	Is the idle slightly lumpy? As paul says and a common one is the oil seperator/breather or the oil return pipe from this to the sump where the dipstick is.

	No, the idle is fairly smooth. I guess it can be lumpy from time to time. I will check the oil pipes etc Thanks
