Topic: Evo Sport for Sale Posted: 18-September-2004 at 05:31 |
Did anyone spot the Evo Sport for sale in this months BMW Car mag, low milage less than 2km for £38950!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it me or is this just getting stupid.
You might as well buy the new shell off ebay and buy all new parts from your local bmw dealer and build a BRAND NEW one for less money. Any one fancy a challenge as i think this would be fun and profitable.

Thats a bargain!!!
If you increased the new price of Sport Evo from £34,500 in 1990 by RPI it would cost £56,912 today, so it's comparable with the E46 on price.
That car will continue to sit in a garage somewhere never to be driven, very sad.

This car actually has -2km (negative 2km) on it. Around this era BMW's were manufactured with about -5km (negative 5km) on them so after being driven around the factory and then PDI'd the car would have 0km on them, so basically this car has done about 3km (I guess you can consider this car brand new, as long as it has been stored well).
This is the same dealer (Vodtek - Chris Wadsley) that had the one that sold for 29,000, it had 2,000 Miles on it.

I've just purchased a Sport Evo from Chris (nice chap) and the above mentioned car is sold. £41000 I think he said it went for.
He has Two left, one with 80k with non-standard suspension and exhaust leather and A/C and one with 43k with cloth.

Sorry, but 41K for a Sport Evo is just mad . If it had zero miles , I still don't think it's worth that much.
I also don't see the point in paying that much for a car because,
1, He probably won't use because .If he did the miles go up and the value goes down.
2, He'll probably be to scared to drive a 41K car on the track or in anger on the road.
3, Probably the type of person that enjoys owning the best example and will only polish the car , rather than drive it as god intended.
It's a drivers car . So drive it !
Just my 2p's worth .

So if people won't use them because of cost/value, how come we see new CSL M3s on track already?? You have to remember that for some lucky people wanting a particular car is enough reason to buy it, money is readily available and they don't have to "ask permission"!
We are only talking about the top 1-2 % of E30 M3s here, we all hear of and know some people who can and do spend that sort of money. What we have to do is enjoy our cars and maintain a balance on cost/value for ourselves. The main reason we buy and enjoy M3s is the fun we have driving them, lets not forget that.

My point is, the guy has paid 28k over the normal value of an average Sport Evo . So do I think he's likely to run the mileage up by using it a lot for track days and sunny weekends? No.
If the miles climb high , the value will drop back to average Sport Evo values, ie, a big loss . Maybe he has the money to do that, and good luck if he has. I just think that people who pay way over the odds for something rare and low miles will be unlikely to use it .
I think the same thing will happen with the E46 CSL , but not just yet as they are still new . When the CSL has aged like a Sport Evo and people are saying ' why don't BMW build cars like that any more ' then a low miles example will probably be the same as what we have with the Sport Evo.
I don't think the higher the value of a car , the less it should be used . Trust me , if I had 160 K to blow on an Aston Martin Vanquish , it would soooo get used

Sorry, but you'd want to be off your head to pay that sort of money. Granted when i buy a car i try to find the best example available, but for that money it would want to be brand new. I think if i had that sort of money to spend on Munichs finest, then a second hand E46 M3 and mint E30 M3 would be more like it.
Whats the point if its not goin to be used, unless its goin to a millionaires private collection or some similar sad git with too much cash.

IMO I think that 40k for a Sport Evo with that
mileage is about right. BMG is probably right in that
it will hardly get used, but the owner is going to be
damn pleased with his purchase. Hey, it's all about
choice, at one end of the scale people polish, shine
and win concours and on the other people modify,
fettle and race on tracks.
Who ever you are who has bought this low mileage
car, have fun, enjoy it and keep it nice for me - might
buy it off you if my numbers come in....

Well let's look at it this way...
If this guy drives it an average of 5,000klms for 10 years - what's a good guess at 25 year old Sport Evo with 50k on it?
Now if you bought a new E46 and drove the same - what is it worth in ten years?
Seems to me there would be more depreciation with the E46.
Now granted, the price here is certainly on the high end, however, all things considerred - what an exciting toy!
Cheers,
Jim

That price is a ridiculous.
The e30 m3 is a drivers car, sport evo or not, they need to be driven.
What sort of state is it going to be in with that little amount of miles on?Surely the engine would require oil to flow and regular usage to keep everything in good order?
hmmmm

Maybe its been clocked! (Only joking)
Perhaps the buyer sees it as a long term investment and does not want to drive it!!!!!!!! What might it be worth in 75 years time?

Big gamble if thinking long term investment. The market in classic cars died some years ago (for the majority of them). This of course doesn`t mean that it won`t be a thriving investment market in the future.
Given that in 75 years there will likely be little oil available, would it actually be worth much considering that it can`t be used? I think that even the owners of classic cars that don`t get used wouldn`t of bought them if they knew that they CANT be used.

just don't follow the reasoning in this thread
wot do you expect a virtually new, sought after model to command in the market? A typical, average, second hand price?
why is it mad for somebody to pay that price? it's their money we're talking about, not ours...
the test of value is the open market, not our opinions on here...
why get so up tight about the value dropping if the buyer uses it? millions of people lose thousands every year by buying new cars and using them
the sport evo was very expensive new - if a virtually new one is available then it makes sense for the price to be high
the point is that generally e30 m3's represent fantastic value - you get a lot of car for the money...just puzzles me when people get bent out of shape because a minter commands an unusually high premium - wot is so difficult to understand about this??
why are you all so punchy about collectors who don't use their cars as often as you all think they should??
does anyone question how often we use ours?
i've lost count of the number of threads on here that miss the point about these cars - they are no longer part of the mainstream where miles histories etc determine value in the same way as a 4 year old focus
who cares if you all think it's ridiculous?
why are millionaires sad gits?
relax everyone and enjoy your own cars....

Franky IMHO if someone wants to pay that sort of money for what is probably getting on for almost a unique vehicle with that mileage good on them. I don't see why they should be criticised any more than someone with an unused 'Penny Black' stamp. You wouldn't tell him to stick it on a letter and send it now would you?
The person who buys it will probably have a couple of other E30 M3s anyway for thrashing around if he's that much of a fan of the car and not short of cash.

I don't think that all the 'millionaires' are that bad, quite a few take their very rare, ireplacable and valuable vintage cars to Goodwood every year they race the **** off them, and some get completly trashed.
They also probably enjoy (or pay someone else) putting it back together again.
