If I am out of touch with society's values, then there are a large number of similarly maladjusted, dysfunctional people out there. You may not be as attuned to the values of society as you think you are.

Spokey as I said you need to look further afield. If you sit in your comfort zone speaking to only like minded people, you will think that is the majority view. You need to have dialogue with all sections of the comunity to get a flavour of what is a majority view. I do have dialogue &  listen to views of all sections & there are a lot of people out there who are very vociferous (on both sides) on the speed issue & there is an even greater number whilst not actively liking cameras, are accepting that that they themselves shouldn't speed. It is this number that from my encounters cover the largest ground. They don't want cameras but they are not going to argue against them, because they fully accept that what they are doing is enforcing a law, a law that they all have broken & been punished for. They realise that it was wrong for them to have been doing that & that they only got what was expected as a result.

You'd probably be surprised at the number of lentilists as you put it & how there numbers compare to petrol heads. As I say though it is the middle ground who hold the majority & realistsic view that they may chance their arm with speeding but accept punishment if caught.
