Hello everyone. I decided to join the forum as i've heard alot good stuff about you guys. My first post will be about the problem i have with my E36 M3 evo.
The car has a strange problem with startup. Both, cold and warm startup but the problem is different when cold. On cold startup, it will choke for a split second and sometimes it will shoot the revs up to 1500rpm and hold it like that for a couple of minutes. When it's happening the car gets little shakes from time to time. Then it feels like something goes into place, engine note changes and the idle becomes smooth. This problem appeared a while ago, then kind of disappeared but it came back after i took all coils and plugs out and swapped them around in random order. Wires were connected back correctly. On warm startup, instead of upping the revs to above 1000 and then bring them down slowly to normal idle speed like every car does, it chokes again for like a second and the revs will struggle to reach a 1000. When it's happening the car feels like it's struggling to keep engine running (maybe misfiring for the first second). When i blip the throttle it clears out and the car sits at normal idle speed without problems. Both of those problems only happen on startup. Otherwise the car runs great. I've tried to fight this problem and this is what i've done so far: -new MAF -new TPS -new coolant temp sensor -new lambda probes -2 new vacuum hoses (rest is all right) -new T piece under inlet plenum -vanos reconditioned -new fuel filter -new camshaft sensors -ICV cleaned Also had the diagnostics done and no codes! Only thing that came up was overfueling on cylinder 3 (additive CO compensation: 343ms). Had adaptation reset and for the first 40 miles the revs would go down really slowly when dipping the clutch while driving. Then all went back to normal but my startup problem is still there. The warm startup problem is more serious when i leave the car sitting with engine off for an hour or so after driving it untill coolant and oil get to their normal operating temperature. Any idea what it might be?? I can't seem to figure it out and it's pissing me off big time. Please help me Martin Edited by mrbeem |

Welcome aboard
What's the age and mileage of the car? How do you tend to use it? What's the service/maintenance history like? Where is it stored when not in use? Do you do any underbonnet detailing? When was the battery last replaced? |

Could possibly be a faulty/failing coil pack or spark plug on cyl 3 giving the overfuelling reading.

The cars milage is 92k, i use it 2 to 3 times a week. It's stored outside the house in a private drive, the engine is 100% stock, it has a new battery. I was thinking coil or plug as well but can it cause the startup problems i've described??
