I was topping up with oil this afternoon and noticed some
fairly bright yellow scum around the top inside of the rocker cover. Is this something to worry about? cheers Pete. |

It might be! But hopefully not. 'Mayonnaise' is caused by water in the oil, one cause of which is a blown head gasket, but at this time of year it could just be a bit of condensation. Wipe it off and see if it recurs. Is it confined to just round the filler?
What car/engine is it? Others with the same motor will no doubt know more. A good thrash is often reccommended, but obviously you don't want to do that unless you're fairly sure it's just condensation! Edited by jetsetwilly2000 |

Hi Sorry, should have said its an E39 2001, 520, not clued
up on which engine that is exactly. Water level is still fine, so hopefully condensation. cheers. |

Does the car do lots of, mainly, short journeys? |

Sporty, yeah a fair amount of small ones, the daily run to
work is +14 miles each way, and then often some small 2-3 miles during the day. cheers Peter. |

Probly just condensation then. Wipe it off, take the car out and thrash the nuts off it, wipe off again and see what happens. Might consider an oil change too if it's close to needing one...

Definitely just condensation from relatively short journies.
Your CATs will feel it too, so a few longer runs are well worthwhile, and maybe some thrashing too, once it's all nice and warm. |
