while it's all apart get your throttles machined to 48mm and port matched to the head. Worth it!

OK - picked up the car Wednesday (1st March) night. Although the engine now in her apparently came out of a Jreg Cab, the head is marked 1988 and the block 23 4E A (195bhp) - can't find it's date stamp.** Meant to have done 'only' 111,000k (1/2 the rest of my car!) and appears to pull oK, although a little fluffy at the moment so obviously needs a tune. - any recommendations around my area (other than powerstation)? Took PikeyM3 out in it Sunday and he seems to think it goes ok. ** Engine number = 6 062 4 395 which translates to S14 / Ser no / Munich / Production Date. BMW can tell you the (original) engine number if you give them a VIN, but not the other way around - can anyone give us a clue when this engine was built?
Anyway I'm pleased to be back on the road - the buzzing I had at 4000rpm, and most of the gear-lever shake has now gone. We suspect that the spring was broken for some time (months & months & ...) and suddenly decided to give up

Well Simon at least you've got your engine up together now. It did seem to go pretty well. I reckon get the TB's balanced and it should run a bit better. Not much else you can do to get it running better really. It seems that your old engine is fixable so not too much lost in the end. Just hassle that you don't need. I looked at the rattle on my car yesterday and it turned out that the bolts holding the prop to the chasis had fallen out!! How the prop didn't shear and scewer me I'll never know!! Will post pics when I get them online. Pikey Edited by PikeyM3 |

Oh didn't I? Must have slipped my mind. Had an annoying tinny rattle under acceleration acoming down the transmision tunnel. Glad I found it. Could have been disasterous! You got the head yet Simon? Pikey |

Time for an update I felt. (Shut-up! You're going to get one anyway) Done the First 1600kms on my 'new' engine, oil & filter change, no problems - so far (ever the optimist me!) Still needs a tune as doesn't pull below 4k, but now happily revs to 6k+ which the original could, but didn't like much - even more reason to suspect the spring was broken when for a..g..e..s.. (not going to say who I blame, but could look here for a clue!! http://www.rede2live.com/AJEC_Web/) Looks like the Cam-Carrier & Head are both repairable without too much expense (thanks PikeyM3) just need to source new valve/valve guide/springs/etc.
The garage sale is now on, first come, first served ....................
"Get your S14 bits 'ere, roll up, roll up........"
PM me............please! (I need the money.)
