I bought my first BM (an E36) when I was 27 after 10 years of Ford and Opel/Vauxhall ownership, including the obligatory MkII Escort and Opel Manta.
At 31 I got my first bike, three months later I bought a bigger bike
At 33 I decided to grow up a bit and bought an E39.... and an even bigger bike
At 36 I was back in an E36
At 37 I also acquired an E32 - and you think the 5 series has an image problem!!
At 39 I've just bought an E34 and am looking at an E38
For me, the number on the bonnet doesn't matter as long as the E-number begins with a 3. I believe that history will show these to be the best models for BMW in terms of quality and reliability. They will also be the last of the BMWs to be suitable for the 'home mechanic'.
My intention is to build up a collection of them from the E31 to the E39, preferably Alpina versions because these tend to be even better screwed together. The exception to this is my 'new' E34 which didn't come from a standard production line in any case, being handbuilt by the //M division.

Chas, can i come to yours when you've completed your collection??!
Ive always been more interested and collected bikes so my car history is somewhat less extensive than you guys but fairly interesting…I think !
1988 1st car Alfa Romeo 1.5Ti Alfasud
Wrote the Alfa off in 1988 and had a collection of runabout minis and bikes until
1995 – Bought a S2 RS Turbo as basically the thing was near on concours – 30K on a “F” plate
Late 1995 2wd Sierra Cosworth
1996 E21 316- This is the car that made me appreciate BMW cars, as a result of driving this car my Dad and brother went out and bought a 2 door E30 325se(which he still has) and a E34 535SE respectively
2003- Subaru Impreza Turbo- no thanks- sold that after a couple of months
2004- Bought my Dads E30 325
2005- Sold the e30 back to my Dad and bought my E34 535 Sport- the best car out of that lot (I still get a bit misty eyed over the cossie when I see one thou’)

ok-lets see if i can remember :
20-21 (whenever I passed my test) 1970 VW Beetle-1200 cc -cobalt blue & chrome perfection-I loved that car it looked absolutely fantastically, drove like crap-I remember being flat out at about 75 & a little yugo flying past me-written off by some muppet in an escort estate-absolutely gutted.(cost £450.00)
due to being skint next car was a R Reg marina (terrible car) with headgasket probs-died eventually (cost £150.00)
22+ 1962 Vauxhall FB Victor-great car-ride comfort was great but didnt corner too well (cost £250 & Sold to father in law to restore for £600.00 as needed money)
23-1960's ish hillman imp-fantastic driving car if a little shall we say basic ! (cost £50.00 & clutch went if I remember)
24-T reg snot green 1200 chevette-good solid car if a bit naff-cant remember what happened to it(cost £250.00)
26- W reg (I think) 2.8 ghia granada-great car-blasting up & down the a13 at 100+ in comfort - cant remember what happened to it (cost £450.00)
27-D reg 1100 fiesta van-converted into car by cutting side panels out with angle grinder & putting windows in-changed interior to an rx2 interior & colour coded bumpers & mirrors etc(cost £1200.00 & did a silly deal with a cavalier due to the arrival of a son)
28-1600 cavalier (gl i think) C reg - drove great good solid vauxhall build quality - traded in for a later sierra which was rubbish
29 1600 sierra (GL) E reg-drove nice & Smooth but bodywork was falling off around me-scrapped after mot failure
At this time I had company cars which I could change as I wanted & Went through:Renault 19,peugeot 405 td,cavalier td,another renault 19,renault megane, seat cordoba, & an escort (gti or whatever it was called at the time) which I wrote off with about 300 miles on in a van & roundabout incident)
While I had co cars I Bouth a runabout for the wife : a 1600 gl MK4 cortina (X reg I think) seemed a good solid car, nice & comfy but pretty gutless-headgasket went so went through my first headgasket change in my very sp**** spare time-was really happy when it started & drove far better than before ,took it for the mot which had just expired & it failed on rotten sills etc-mot bloke actually pulled the seatbelt mountings away from the car by hand so it was scrapped after all my work.
31ish-1991 escort diesel estate,ex police-good solid workhorse but totally uninspiring to drive swapped engine due to cambelt going.(£4000.00-sold to my brother in law)
33ish p reg laguna 1.8-good car ,uninspiring but reliable-clocked up 170,000,sold last year for £500.00
at this time I started getting 2nd cars for the wife so I got a n reg peugeot 405 exec -had to replace the gearbox & traded it in for a t reg 1.8 rt sport laguna.
38-got my first bmw - an 89 520 which was great & Then acquired a 96 525 se in a "business deal".
39-van hit me up the backside & wrote of the se & through the payout got my current 92 525 sport & also bought my wife a w reg scenic 1.6 auto out of the proceeds.
this week traded the scenic against an x reg scenic rx4 as the other one was ****e.
will be selling the other laguna this weekend.
Bloody hell-its like sodding war & peace-didnt realise how many cars I have owned

21 Ford Sierra 1.8LX - company car - dull but my first ever new car
22 Renault 5 GT Turbo - anything but dull, very good for killing yourself in
22 (concurrently) Triumph Vitesse 2l MK1 convertible - huge moneypit, but lovely on a summers day if you didn't mind breaking down on every journey
24 no car - driving ban!
26 Mitsubishi Galant - dull but well specced

32 BMW 323 Coupe (Company Car)

No that impressive list for me either........
17=1983 volvo 343 GLT 1.7 yes i know what a bad choice but built like a tank, was 100% reliable and the only car i made a profit on! bought for £550 sold for £750
18=1984 Ford sierra 2.0 ghia auto fell apart with rust but nice comfy car to drive, well until it died with cambelt failure
20=1988 Ford escort 1.6 ghia was obviously cheaply resprayed just before i bought it as it was immaculate then 6 months later was rusty everywhere!
21=BMW 316 carb model in diamond black, what a great little car and is the reason i have stuck with the marque ever since.
25=BMW 525ise auto 24v in granite silver with leather etc... lovely car and the one i should have kept as i still miss it now
28=Bmw e39 528ise steptronic my current car,but for how long i dont know as it is currently up for sale as i fancy a change!Dont know what to replace it with and may still keep it.
