It's on a D-plate, but the bumpers are definitely "Highline" ones. But the headlights are NOT "Highline" ones. And the text says "6-speed"!!! So.....who's telling porkies? |

1987? Thought that's when the Highlines came out.
Maybe the first of the Highlines didn't get the "Smiley" lights.
Somebody put an M5 box in??? |

September 1987, Andy. That would have been a late E-plate.
All "Highlines" had ellipsoids as standard.
Errm.....how?!? |

don't think so.... my car is on a D plate and was built and registered early '87. Dec 7 would be 'E', dec 88 would be 'F'. I've seen chrome bumper cars on 'E' plates but not 'highlines' on a 'D' plate before... mind you when did they change? I'm not sure it was sept '87 it might have been a month or two earlier in the factory... all very strange.... cheers

How did they put a gearbox in? Well, first they took they old one out . . . See the E24 forum on Roadfly.com for details on how they did it. |

D: 1/8/86 - 31/7/87 E: 1/8/87 - 31/7/88 F: 1/8/88 - 31/7/89 A car built in Sept 87 could not be registered on a D plate, but a car built a few months earlier for September release, dealer preview, publicity car etc. could have made it on to the "D" plate. Might be worth investigating? It's an unusual conversion to do from chrome bumper to Highline, but it's feasible. Could also be a dodgy accident rebuild or a plain simple old fashioned ringer

I think the most likely answer is the car has been updated with
Highline bumpers. A common practice with Merc CE coupes is to put the
later face-lifted front onto an older car.
It's certainly given us something to gas about. |

there is quite a lot of bodywork to do at the back, changing bumper types isn't a bolt on job at all.... maybe the car has a different (older) reg plate fitted; this can be done....

Older number plates would answer the question of it's age but what about the headlights & the lack of rear headrests?

I wouldn't pay any attention to the date of manufacture on the RAC website, it's always wrong.
This was taken from the DVLA website...

As long as they pick me up if I break down I'm not bothered.. ..interesting site btw. |

Yeh, found it quite by chance. Looked up some of my old cars to see if they're still around. Not many are... My fathers old Highline still is though
